Woman sends back ‘barat’ after dowry demand

A woman from Bangana town of the Una district refused to marry a man and sent back the barat after he demanded dowry from her parents, police here said.

According to a family member of the woman, she was scheduled to marry a man from Galore in Hamirpur, who, when he came with barat, demanded from her family a car, a hefty amount of money, and gold jewellery.

When the bride heard about the dowry demand, she broke the marriage immediately and sent back the barat, the family member said.

A brother of the woman has lodged a complaint of dowry against the groom’s family at Bangana Police Station, confirmed station in-charge, Baburam. The matter is being investigated, he added.

The woman broke the marriage at a time when the preparations to welcome to barat were in full swing and all the guests were there to join the feast, the family member said.

As it happens, the groom, who lives abroad, had come to house of the woman on February 19 to complete the ritual of offering chunni to the woman, but did not come forth with his demands. Nor did he do that when on Tuesday the woman’s family went to his house for another ritual, the family member said.

At least seven persons were injured after an auto collided with a car in Siot area of Rajouri, officials said.

An official said that the accident took place in the Thursday evening. “In the incident at least seven persons were injured and they have been shifted to a hospital,” he said.

The injured have been identified as Amar Latif (35), Laliya (25), Rahila (26)—all residents of Mendhar, Deepak Sharma (35)of Dharamsal, Siddhant Sharma (24), Paviter Bala (28), Anita Devi (29), Rekha Devi (35), Priya Sharma (24) and Jatinder Sharma (31)—all residents of Siot.

He said police have taken cognisance of the incident.

11-old girl in Australia has said she plans on retiring so that she can focus on her schooling, according to a report.

The outlet further said that Pixie Curtis makes more than $133,000 (Rs 1.1 crore) a month.

Ms Curtis also owns a luxury car – a Mercedes – despite not being able to drive it.

Her earnings are from Pixie’s Pix, a company selling hair bows and headbands. The business was set up by the girl’s mother, Roxy Jacenko, an Australia businesswoman.

Pixie has decided to hang her online toy store shoes up to focus on her impending entry into high school,” she told media.

“In short, over the past few months, we have been discussing the business plans going forward as a family and decided that while it has been an amazing journey starting some three years ago, it was time to refocus with high school just around the corner,” Ms Jacenko added.

Pixie Curtis’ 11th birthday party went viral in August last year for being so lavish that it cost $40,000, as per a report.

She has 121,000 followers on Instagram where the girl keeps posting videos and photos of the things she owns and her outings with friends.

In an unfortunate incident, one of the Government teacher chopped off colleague’s ear during a scuffle in Buchoo area of Pattan north Kashmir’s Baramulla district,today.

As per a report,  a minor scuffle erupted between two teachers at the Government Middle School Buchoo during an enrollment drive, during which the duo engaged in a verbal brawl which turned into a physical fight.

During this fight, one of the teacher identified as Imtiyaz Ahmed roughed up his colleague and chopped off his ear with his teeth. The injured teacher was rushed to the nearby hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

The Jammu Kashmir Police has registered a case in this regard and started further investigation.

The Zonal Educational Officer Pattan has received a complaint in this regard and also recommended that he should be suspended. “It is unfortunate that teachers engage in such behaviour. The incident has been condemned by teachers,” he said

Jammu lawyers announces work suspension against imposition of property tax in J&K

The Jammu chapter of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association yesterday announced a one-day suspension of work against the decision of the administration to impose property tax in the Union Territory.

 

“We strongly condemn imposition of property tax on the people, who are reeling under financial distress owing to wrong policies of this administration. We have an anti-encroachment drive where the people in possession of land for over decades together are deprived of their land,”  Bar association president M K Bhardwaj told media.

“Such important decisions should have been left for an elected government rather than by the Lt Governor administration. The government should immediately restore statehood and hold assembly elections,” Bhardwaj said.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Tuesday issued a notification for imposition of property tax in the Union Territory which will come into effect from the next financial year.

Demanding immediate withdrawal of the notification, he said the bar would not hesitate in calling for a general strike against the “tax terrorism” and challenge the “anti-people” measures in the people’s court.

He claimed that the people are upset with the “wrong policies” of the administration.

Meanwhile, Mayor Rajinder Sharma said the imposition of the property tax is a decision of the Lt governor administration and not of the JMC.

“We have decided to convene the general house on Saturday to hear the public opinion (on the property tax) and will accordingly take up the issue with Lt Governor as well as BJP state and National presidents,” he said.

Three persons were killed and nearly 50 others injured on Thursday when a packed bus carrying members of a wedding party collided with a tree in Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli district, police said.

Out of the injured people, 11 were critically hurt, they said.

An initial investigation suggested the bus driver lost control over the wheels in a bid to avoid hitting a motorbike which came in its way suddenly, Mada police station inspector Kapoor Tripathi said.

The bus, carrying members of the groom’s side along with the bride, hit the tree on a roadside at Dhari village, about 60 km from the district headquarters, he said.

They were returning home after the marriage when the accident took place.

Three men – identified as Manik Kes Biyar (45), Umar Kes Bind (35) and Bhai Lal Biyar (50) – sitting on the front row seats died on the spot, the official said.

The injured persons were admitted to the district hospital, he said.

Talking about the govt’s very recent move on implementing the property tax in J&K, the actor expressed his views to the media in a humorous act.

Disguising as ‘Bhat Sahab’, Mr Sanyam Pandoh, who stood outside a house with a measuring tape, said, “I’m measuring my land to estimate how much property tax I have to pay to the govt as they have now introduced land tax here”.

“Now people of Jammu are feeling that abrogation of Article 370 has worsen the affairs in J-K”, Pandoh said mockingly.

“The govt said that the smart meters will not be installed here, but they introduced here. Now, the local leaders will deliver long speeches that the land tax will not be imposed here, but finally they will implement it here”, he added.

“The toll plazas are still here and now the residences of people are being bulldozed”, he said making a face.

“Taxes after taxes are being imposed on people here”, he asserted funnily.

“The locals here have to talk to LG sir about this new govt policy because he is not hearing out representatives of people here”, he remarked.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration had on Tuesday ordered the imposition of property tax across its municipal areas from 1 April.

The tax rates will be five percent of the Annual Value (TAV) for residential properties and six percent for commercial properties.

Jammu: A road accident  has appeared in which a speeding truck allegedly hit a car on Jammu-Pathankot National highway in Kalibari, Kathua on Thursday.

The report has said that a car bearing registration number ‘PB65AT5924’ hit by a truck bearing registration number ‘PB02BV9750’ on Jammu-Pathankot National highway.

“I was driving in my lane then a car came from other side of the road, I don’t know why he suddenly took a cut and in a bid to save him I turned my truck”, Driver of the truck said.

“There were two bikes which were heading towards me, I also saved them”, he added.

“I’m a local resident and I came here to get my car repair in a garage here. I saw a truck and bus was trying to overtake eachother and when the truck went ahead speedily it hit a car, which got dragged over 100ft”, Mr Madhuresh Bali a local said.

“He climbed on the divider and was about to hit a scooty and a biker, but they escaped the hit minutely, the truck driver was fleeing but we caught him”, he added.

Two women died after an unidentified vehicle ran over them while they were out for a morning walk on a service road on the Baramati-Indapur Palkhi highway in Pune.
An offence in this connection was lodged at the Walchandnagar police station.
According to police, the deceased, who were in their 40s, were residents of Anand Nagar in Indapur.
