Congress March Foiled In Jammu; JKPCC President Among Many Detained

Scores of Congress activists, including Pradesh Congress Committee president Vikar Rasool Wani, were detained on Monday here after they tried to take out a march to the Raj Bhavan over the Adani issue and alleged anti-people policies of the Jammu and Kashmir administration.

The protesters, including Congress working President Raman Bhalla and former minister Yogesh Sawhney, also chanted slogans in support of restoration of statehood and early assembly elections in the Union Territory.

“We are assembled here to take out a march to the Raj Bhavan to lodge our protest against the BJP for denying a probe into allegations of financial irregularities and market manipulation by the Adani group. The ‘Modi-Adani friendship’ has destroyed this country,” Wani said before leading the protest march from outside the Maharaja Hari Singh Park in the city.

As the marchers reached nearby Vivekanand chowk en route to the Raj Bhavan, police intervened and took many of them into preventive custody. The protesters were boarded into two buses and whisked away to a nearby police installation.

“We are also protesting against the onslaught of the Lt Governor led administration by imposing ‘anti-people’ laws since 2019 (when special status of J-K under Article 370 was revoked and the state was bifurcated into two union territories),” the JKPCC president said.
He denounced the J-K administration for imposition of property tax, launching anti-encroachment drives, growing unemployment, job scams and hiring of a previously blacklisted company to conduct computer-based written tests for filling up various government vacancies.

Bhalla said the protest was planned to press for the setting up of a joint parliamentary committee to probe allegations of fraud against industrialist Gautam Adani, growing inflation, baton charge on peaceful protestors, including students and casual labourers, restoration of statehood and early assembly elections.

Condemning the police action, Congress spokesperson Jahanzaib Sirwal said, “This is the state of affairs in J-K where a peaceful protest is not allowed.” “It (detention of peaceful protesters) is the ‘murder’ of democracy but such things will not stop us from raising the issues concerning the public and demand for restoration of statehood and early assembly elections,” Sirwal said.

The Congress leader said his party will continue to raise the public issues and expose the BJP for trying to “suppress the opposition”.

Violence in Kashmir coming down, zero-tolerance on terrorism to continue: Amit Shah

Noting that the Centre has successfully tackled several internal security challenges in the last nine years, Union Home Minister Amit Shah yesterday stressed that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government’s policy of zero-tolerance towards terrorism would continue.

Speaking at the 54th Raising Day celebrations of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), he said separatism, terrorism, and anti-national activities in any part of the country will be dealt with firmly.

Highlighting the role of CAPFs (Central Armed Police Forces) and state police in the fight against “terror”, Shah termed it ‘significant’ and said it has been demonstrated in the last nine years.

Speaking of the security situation in parts of the country, he affirmed that violence in Kashmir and insurgency in Northeast and Left Wing Extremism-affected areas are coming down, while people’s confidence is increasing.

The number of people involved in “terror” related activities is on the decline, many are giving up arms and returning to mainstream, he said.

Averring that any country can make progress only if the security of its airports, ports, and industrial establishments is assured, Shah said CISF’s history of 53 years shows that it has immensely contributed to the economic progress of the nation.

The security of airports, ports, and other establishments of national importance is very important if the target of a five trillion dollar economy set by PM Modi is to be realized, he pointed out, expressing confidence that CISF will prepare itself to meet all the future challenges.

Shah further said the Union Home Ministry would leave no stone unturned to equip the CISF with the modern technologies to face the challenges of the future.

In this context, he said the Home Ministry has already drawn up an action plan.

In the next 10 years, several opportunities would be available to CISF for development.

In the contemporary digital age, CISF has provided security to its stakeholders, he said adding that the security protocol has been made impenetrable by equipping it with state-of-the-art technologies like robotics, and artificial intelligence.

On the hybrid model adopted by CISF, the Union Home Minister said it is going to enhance the force’s role in the times to come. The model would pave way for its use in advisory and many other roles in private companies as well.

In the coming decades, the central force would be able to safeguard even private companies from security threats related to drones and modern technology.

Observing that India has become a fast-growing economy today, Shah said it is our responsibility to keep the country’s institutions, mines, ports, and airports safe.

The Union Home Minister further said there are several challenges facing the country today, such as counterfeit currency trade, infiltration, and narcotics, and with a bright history, CISF has secured the country.

Later, Shah paid homage to the CISF personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty since its inception.

CISF Director General (DG) Sheel Vardhan Singh spoke on the occasion.

For the first time, the CISF held its annual Raising Day celebrations out of Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) at the CISF National Industrial Security Academy (NISA) at Hakimpet here.

India will take on Australia in the final of the WTC at the Oval in London from June 7 to 11. Australia qualified for the final after winning the 3rd Test against India in Indore earlier in the month. Later,  National Conference (NC) president Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti and Congress leader Raman Bhalla, joined the protesters.

Late in the evening,  Iltija Mufti, daughter of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also joined the protest with her mother and speaking on the sidelines of protest, said:” It’s explicit that corruption has taken place when JKSSB test tender was handed over to Aptech”.

“There are rumors that a son of a union minister and a civil servant is involved in this scandal, who have been bribed and to conceal this case they’re being protected”, she said.

“This is very unfair with our state youth cause recently a surge has been seen in the unemployment of J-K and currently we’re at 40% of unemployment rate”, she added.

“In all this if the govt can’t even conduct exams with transparency then what caliber it does have”, Iltija alleged.

“The govt is only making a show of normalcy and clarity, but the ground reality is neither there is transparency and nor there is accountability here”, she asserted.

“So many things must not supposed to be happen such as removal of A-370, but as there is an adage better late than never it’s very good because of our youngsters all local parties have come together and lashing out at the local regime”, she said.

“On one side the govt is indulged in JKSSB recruitment scandal and on the other they’re  cane-charging on the peaceful protesting youth here. What kind of justice is this”, Iltija alleged.

“The govt claims that they stands with youngsters but from 2019 onwards, why there are frauds occurring in recruitment exams. They only wants to be in power, they are anti-youth, pandits and people”, she further alleged.

“The LG govt is responsible for all this and it should take onus, we don’t know what conflict is going on between LG and BJP, but in all of this our youth is the one who is bearing the brunt”, she remarked.

“Governor is not even a local and the youth is paying the price of miscommunication between the LG regime and  central govt”, she said.

“If the regime has debarred Aptech from taking exams then why they are continuously giving contracts to the firm to take tests. Does this mean that LG govt is involved in scandals”, asked Iltija.

“The High court has agreed that the clauses of JKSSB recruitment tender was changed to favour Aptech, why did that happen and why they’re not exposing corruption happened at the top”, she said.
