Srinagar, Aug 14: On the occasion of Independence Day 2025, Jammu & Kashmir Police has achieved a historic feat by topping the national list of Gallantry Medal recipients, securing an impressive 127 Medals for Gallantry (GM) — the highest among all States, Union Territories, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).

The distinction recognises acts of exceptional bravery and courage, particularly in high-risk situations. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) followed with 20 Gallantry Medals, while Chhattisgarh Police ranked third with 14 medals. The Border Security Force (BSF) also made a significant mark, bagging 16 Gallantry Medals.

In addition to gallantry honours, the Government of India awarded 89 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 635 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM) to personnel across the nation’s police, fire, home guard, civil defence, and correctional departments.

The high tally for J&K Police reflects the challenging operational environment in the Union Territory, where personnel face complex security scenarios on a daily basis. From anti-terror operations to law and order management, their service involves constant risk and sacrifice.

Security experts believe this recognition underscores the exceptional professionalism, resilience, and dedication of the J&K Police in safeguarding lives and ensuring peace.

Officials in the UT have lauded the awardees, noting that such honours not only acknowledge past bravery but also inspire the next generation of officers to serve with the same commitment.

This Independence Day’s honours list stands as a testament to the courage of India’s security forces and their unwavering duty to the nation.

Mumbai Police Registers ₹60 Crore Fraud Case Against Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra

Mumbai – Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty and her husband, businessman Raj Kundra, have been booked in a ₹60 crore cheating and criminal breach of trust case filed by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police.

The complaint, lodged at Juhu Police Station by Mumbai-based businessman Deepak Kothari, alleges that the couple, along with an unidentified associate, deceived him in a high-value financial transaction linked to their now-defunct company Best Deal TV Private Limited.

According to the FIR, Kothari was introduced to the couple by one Rajesh Arya. At that time, Shetty and Kundra reportedly held 88% stake in the company. Initially, they sought a ₹75 crore loan at 12% annual interest. Later, they persuaded him to convert it into an investment, claiming it would be more tax-efficient.

Kothari claims they promised fixed monthly returns and full repayment of the principal amount — assurances which were allegedly never honoured.

The EOW has begun investigations into the case. While no arrests have been made yet, the matter is attracting attention due to Raj Kundra’s history of legal controversies.

“Only Islamic Scholars Can Decide Halal or Haram, Not Government Officers,” Says Grand Mufti of J&K

Idara Shariah passes resolution seeking ban on frozen meat imports, strict inspections and crackdown on counterfeit drugs, alcohol and narcotics

Imran Naikoo

Srinagar, 13 Aguust : The Grand Mufti of Jammu & Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, presiding over a special meeting of the Idara Shariah, has issued a strong resolution condemning the sale of rotten, foul-smelling and unsafe meat and poultry products in the J&K. The resolution calls for immediate and exemplary action against those involved.

According to the statement, recent raids by the Food Safety Department in various parts of Jammu & Kashmir led to the seizure and destruction of large quantities of spoiled meat, chicken and processed items. However, the public remains shocked and confused as to why such substandard products had been served to them for years without any action being taken earlier.

Citizens are questioning whether this situation is the result of collusion between the authorities and the meat mafia or due to sheer negligence over the past years. The resolution notes that while the mafia sells meat at ₹150 per kg claiming it to be “halal” and providing certificates, officials from the Food Safety Department themselves have cast doubts over its authenticity.

The Grand Mufti pointed out that meat sold at ₹150 per kg could not possibly be from a genuinely halal-slaughtered animal. He further stressed that the decision of what is halal or haram must be made by qualified Islamic scholars and muftis, not by government officers.

Key recommendations put forward in the resolution include:

Complete ban on the import of frozen meat and poultry within Jammu & Kashmir.
Mandatory inspection of dairy products and beverages before they are allowed in the market.
Regular quality checks on bakery products and related items.
Total prohibition on the sale of counterfeit medicines, with immediate confiscation through raids conducted in the presence of press and media.
Public advisory to completely avoid consuming items prepared from frozen chicken or frozen meat, considering them haram.

The resolution also expressed deep concern over the rising use of alcohol and intoxicants, stating that alcohol has destroyed countless homes. Religious leaders, preachers and members of civil society were urged to play an active role in educating people about the harmful effects of liquor and drugs. The public was also reminded to avoid extravagance and showmanship in weddings.

The resolution was signed by: Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, Dr. Molvi Umar Farooq, Mufti Nazir Ahmad Qasmi, Molana Showkat Hussain Keng, Molvi Shams-ur-Rehman Shams, Dr. Muhammad Sameer Siddiqi, Mufti Muhammad Yaqoob Baba, Mufti Ashfaq-ullah Qasmi, Agha Syed Hadi, Agha Mujtaba Abbas (Budgam), Mufti Mudasir Ahmad Qadri, Syed Saleem Gilani and Ajaz Ahmad Banday.

India Rejects Hague Court Authority Over Indus Waters Dispute

New Delhi, August 13, 2025: India has firmly rejected the authority of the Court of Arbitration at The Hague concerning disputes under the Indus Waters Treaty, labeling the tribunal as “illegal” and its proceedings void. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement on Friday, asserting that the court’s formation violates the 1960 treaty and lacks jurisdiction over issues related to the Kishenganga and Ratle hydropower projects in Jammu and Kashmir.

The controversy follows a supplemental award by the Court of Arbitration, which claimed competence to address a dispute initiated by Pakistan over India’s decision to suspend the treaty on April 23, following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The MEA emphasized that India has consistently opposed the court’s existence, arguing that its establishment breaches treaty provisions. “India has never recognized the existence in law of this so-called Court of Arbitration,” the ministry stated, adding that any awards or decisions from the tribunal are “illegal and per se void.”

India maintains that the treaty, brokered by the World Bank in 1960, remains in abeyance until Pakistan halts cross-border terrorism. The MEA reiterated that no arbitral body—especially one deemed unlawfully constituted—can question India’s sovereign actions. India has refused to participate in the tribunal’s proceedings, noting that the supplemental award focuses on asserting jurisdiction rather than directly addressing the hydropower projects.

The 1960 agreement allocates the waters of the eastern rivers—Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi—to India for unrestricted use, while the western rivers—Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab—are largely assigned to Pakistan, with India allowed limited domestic, irrigation, and hydroelectric usage. Disputes over the Kishenganga and Ratle projects reflect ongoing tensions between the two nations over water management in the Indus Basin.

Kulgam Apple Growers Stage Protest, Urge PM Modi to Impose Tax on U.S. Apples

Kulgam, Aug 13: Apple growers in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district staged a protest on Wednesday, calling upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “act boldly” and impose import duties on U.S. apples, which they say are flooding Indian markets and hurting the local horticulture economy.

Gathered in the district’s main fruit mandi, dozens of orchardists and traders raised slogans against the government’s “indifference” towards the plight of Kashmir’s apple industry. They said the unchecked import of foreign apples—especially from the United States—is causing severe losses to local growers, who are already grappling with high input costs, rising transportation charges, and adverse weather conditions.

“Cheap U.S. apples are capturing our markets. If the government does not step in, our decades-old horticulture industry will collapse,” said one protesting farmer. “We urge PM Modi to be brave and put a heavy tax on these imports to protect domestic farmers.”

The protesters also expressed strong resentment over what they termed “anti-farmer” policies, including repeated hikes in electricity tariffs. They demanded the immediate rollback of these hikes, saying higher power bills are adding to the financial burden on orchardists who rely on irrigation and cold storage facilities.

Another major demand raised during the protest was the grant of amnesty on Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans. Farmers said that many orchardists are unable to repay their loans due to declining profits and successive crop damages caused by untimely rains and hailstorms.

“We are not asking for freebies; we are asking for survival,” said another protester. “If the government can waive corporate loans, it should also provide relief to struggling farmers in Kashmir.”

The protesters warned of intensifying their agitation if their demands are not met. They called for a coordinated response from fruit growers across the Valley to press for the imposition of import duties, rollback of power tariff hikes, and amnesty on KCC loans.

Kashmir’s horticulture sector, which employs hundreds of thousands and contributes significantly to the region’s economy, has been under stress in recent years due to climate challenges, competition from imported produce, and rising operational costs.

PDP Leader Waheed Rehman Para Urges CM to Clear Pending Compassionate Appointment Cases

PDP Leader Waheed Rehman Para Urges CM to Clear Pending Compassionate Appointment Cases
PDP Leader Waheed Rehman Para Urges CM to Clear Pending Compassionate Appointment Cases

Srinagar, Aug 13:
PDP’s Member of the Legislative Assembly and senior leader Waheed Rehman Para has raised serious concern over the prolonged delay in clearing hundreds of compassionate appointment cases pending with the Jammu and Kashmir Government.

Para pointed out that 928 cases under SRO-43 and 1,279 cases under the Rehabilitation Assistance Scheme (RAS) remain unresolved in the General Administration Department (GAD), despite being eligible for processing. He said these files represent the “stories of families who have lost their sole breadwinner and are now left in an uncertain and desperate situation.”

Under the existing provisions, the Chief Minister has the authority to relax certain rules and approve such appointments. Para stressed that the precedent has already been set when the Office of the Lieutenant Governor recently used special powers to appoint hundreds of victims of terror.

“Every day of inaction prolongs the suffering of these families,” Para said, adding that this delay undermines the authority of the elected office and allows unelected bureaucrats to overshadow democratic institutions in J&K.

He noted that most of the affected families have neither the resources nor the influence to navigate the slow and complex bureaucratic system. “Compassionate appointments were meant to provide dignity and a means of survival, not to be buried under procedural delays and technical excuses,” he said.

Calling the matter urgent, Para urged the Chief Minister to use special powers to immediately clear all pending cases and deliver relief to the affected families.
