18th Lok Sabha Concludes Amid Protests Over Bihar Voter List Revision

New Delhi, Aug 21: The 18th Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Thursday, bringing the latest session to a formal close. Speaker Om Birla announced the adjournment, marking the end of a sitting that, while showing productivity in terms of bills passed, remained overshadowed by loud disruptions and protests from the Opposition.

The primary flashpoint of the session was the special intensive revision of Bihar’s electoral rolls. With the state heading for Assembly elections in November this year, Opposition parties consistently voiced concerns about transparency and fairness in the process. Their demands for accountability led to frequent interruptions, forcing several debates to end abruptly.

The concluding day saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arriving at 12:04 p.m. to attend the final proceedings. Their presence underlined the significance of the moment, even as tensions between the treasury and Opposition benches lingered.

Despite disruptions, the session managed to process a significant legislative workload. Multiple bills were introduced and cleared, covering governance, administration, and reforms. However, the contentious issue of Bihar’s electoral roll revision overshadowed much of the progress, ensuring that headlines were dominated less by laws passed and more by the political clash.

Speaker Om Birla, in his address, expressed appreciation for the constructive contributions made during calmer stretches of the session but also reminded members about the need for discipline and respect for parliamentary procedures. He urged lawmakers to prioritize meaningful debate over disruption, noting that the true essence of parliamentary democracy lies in dialogue.

As the House wrapped up, political observers highlighted the broader implications of the protests. With Bihar elections only months away, voter list revisions are expected to remain a contentious issue in the national discourse. The Opposition has already hinted at taking its concerns beyond Parliament, possibly escalating the matter into the courts or mass campaigns on the ground.

The adjournment of the 18th Lok Sabha thus not only marks the close of a session but also sets the stage for a politically charged season ahead. The focus now shifts to Bihar, where the outcome of the Assembly elections will carry weight far beyond the state’s borders.

Bhopal Mosque Dispute: Waqf Board Challenges Demolition Notices in High Court

Bhopal is witnessing growing tension after the district administration issued demolition notices to two mosques located near the city’s historic Bade Talab. The Dilkash Mosque and the Bhadbhada Mosque have been declared “illegal structures” by the administration, which maintains that they were constructed on encroached land within the designated “No Development Zone.”

The notices were served as part of a larger anti-encroachment drive targeting nearly 35 structures, including temples and shrines, built along the periphery of the lake. Officials argue that these constructions pose a threat to the water body and violate environmental norms.

The Madhya Pradesh Waqf Board has strongly opposed the order, claiming that both mosques are registered Waqf properties with historical records dating back to 1937. The Board approached the High Court after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) declined to intervene. In its petition, the Board argued that the administration’s decision undermines constitutional protections of religious properties and amounts to targeting a particular community.

Local Muslim organisations have warned of strong protests if the demolition goes ahead, stating that the mosques have been places of worship for decades. On the other hand, Hindu groups have demanded immediate action, calling the structures illegal encroachments on public land.

The controversy has also sparked political reactions, with opposition leaders accusing the government of selectively targeting religious institutions, while ruling party representatives maintain that the drive is aimed at protecting the city’s ecological balance.

For now, the fate of the two mosques lies with the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which is expected to hear the matter in the coming days. The administration has indicated that no demolition will be carried out until the legal process is complete.

Parliament Monsoon Session: Amit Shah Tables Key Bills, Opposition Erupts in Protest

Parliament Monsoon Session: Amit Shah Tables Key Bills

In a dramatic Monsoon Session of Parliament today, Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced several landmark legislations, triggering heated protests and repeated adjournments. Among the most significant was the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, which proposes the removal of a Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or minister if they face serious criminal charges and remain in custody for over 30 consecutive days.

The Bill seeks to amend Article 75 of the Constitution, making it mandatory for such ministers to be removed by the President on the Prime Minister’s advice. Shah argued that the move was essential to uphold integrity in public life and ensure accountability in governance.

Alongside, Shah tabled the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025. These wide-ranging proposals cover issues from administrative reforms to regulating emerging sectors like online gaming.

However, the session quickly descended into chaos as the Opposition raised strong objections, calling the bills “draconian” and “anti-democratic.” AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi opposed their introduction, alleging that they undermine the principle of separation of powers and give the executive unchecked authority. “This is nothing but a step toward creating a Police State,” Owaisi declared, warning that elected governments could be destabilized on flimsy grounds.

The uproar forced the Lok Sabha to be adjourned twice, first till 2 pm and later till 3 pm, as opposition members shouted slogans and staged protests inside the House. The Rajya Sabha too faced disruptions, with members raising issues of alleged “vote theft” before being adjourned.

Amid the din, Amit Shah confirmed that the contentious bills will be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed scrutiny.

As the political storm continues, the Monsoon Session has set the stage for a fierce debate over governance, accountability, and the balance of democratic powers.
