J&K reels under freezing weather as mercury plunges to minus

Mercury continued its free fall in Kashmir division with most places recording this season’s lowest minimum temperature on Thursday, the second day of ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the 40-day severe period of winter.

Quoting a meteorological department official, a local media outlet reported that Srinagar recorded a low of minus 5.5°C against 4.2°C on the previous night. Besides being the coldest lowest temperature this season, the mercury was 3.5°C below normal during this time of the year, the official said.

Qazigund recorded a low of minus 4.4°C against minus 4.2°C on the previous night. The temperature was 2.4°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 6.8°C against minus 6.2°C on the previous night. Apart from being below normal by 1.8°C, it was also the coldest night this season in the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Kokernag also hit the season’s coldest temperature, recording a low of minus 3.3°C against minus 2.4°C on the previous night, he said. It was 1.2°C below normal for the place, he said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 5.2°C against minus 4.6°C on the previous night, the official said. It was 0.6°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the official said.

In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at minus 5.1°C against minus 4.4°C on the previous night, the official said. While being 2.5°C below normal, it was also the coldest temperature recorded so far in the north Kashmir area, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 7.5°C against 6.3°C on the previous night. It was 0.7°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said. Banihal recorded a low of minus 1.2°C against last night’s 2.0°C (overall below normal by 2.1°C), Batote 1.1°C (2.1°C below normal), Katra 5.6°C (1.3°C below normal) and Bhadarwah minus 0.9°C (0.4°C below normal).

In Ladakh, Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 12.0°C and 12.8 °C respectively, the official said.

MeT said that there will be mainly dry weather till December 25.

“From 26-30th generally cloudy sky with intermittent light to moderate snow is expected at scattered places of Kashmir, higher reaches of Jammu and light rain in plains of Jammu (60℅chance),” the MeT official said, “Snowfall and below freezing temperature may lead to temporary disruption of surface transportation on places like Mughal road, Zojila, Karna, Sadna top etc during 26-27th, although there’s no forecast of any Major snow spell.”

 

Transfer and Postings in J&K Police Department

Dec 22: The District Police Office Rajouri ordered transfer of several police officers including four Station House Officers in the district.

An order to this effect has been issued by Senior Superintendent of Police Rajouri.

As per the order, Inspector Niku Ram Thakur has been posted as Station House Officer Budhal replacing Mustaj Ahmed who has been deployed in District Police Office Rajouri while Insp Raza Ali has been posted as SHO of Kandi police station in place of Insp Habib Khan who has been shifted to District Police Lines Rajouri. Similarly, Insp Manzoor Kohli has been posted as Station House Officer Kalakote in place of Insp Deepak Pathania who has been posted as Station House Officer Sunderbani replacing Insp Shiv Dev Singh who has been shifted to District Police Lines Rajouri. On the other hand, SI Mehmood Khan has been posted as Incharge Police Post Peeri.

Jammu: 3 injured in bear attack in village

Rajouri, Dec 22: At least three people sustained injuries, two of whom are critical, in attack by a wild bear in far flung Kotcharwal village of Rajouri.

Two of the injured have been referred to Government Medical College Jammu in critical condition. As per locals of the area, these villagers were present in their fields when a wild bear appeared from nearby bushes and attacked them. In the incident Mohd Munshi (55) son of Mir, Buttu (35) son of Wali Mohd and Abdul Rashid (30) son of Mohd Younis, all residents of Kotcharwal, got injured who were removed from the clutches of wild animal by other villagers.

Injured were taken to local hospital from where Mohd Munshi and Buttu have been referred to GMC Jammu and both are in serious condition and have deep injuries.

Youths demand free ‘kaju katli’, open fire in sweets shop

The Sinhagad highway police of Maharashtra yesterday arrested a youth and detained a minor for allegedly attempting to open hearth at a candy store proprietor for refusing to offer them free ’kaju katli.’

The accused has been recognized as Suraj Brahmdev Munde (23), a resident of Manikbaug.

The incident passed off on Monday, December 19, when the sufferer recognized as Jodharam Chaudhari was current at his candy store situated close to Goyal Ganga Chowk on Sinhagad highway. Each the accused entered the store and requested totally free 1kg of ‘kaju katali.’ When Chaudhari refused, the accused threatened to kill him.

Traffic Restored On Jammu-Srinagar National Highway

Srinagar, Dec 21: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which was closed due to stoneslide near Dewal bridge on Wednesday, has now been re-opened for vehicular traffic, officials said.

“Traffic released from both ends on Jammu-Srinagar NHW after clearance of debris (single carriageway),” Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police said.

Earlier, all type of vehicles remained suspended on the National Highway in view of major stoneslide near Dewal bridge which had damaged both sides of the National Highway.

The highway is the lifeline of the Kashmir Valley as it is the main road link connecting it with the rest of the country.

Kashmir-bound trucks laden with essential supplies and other vehicles pass through the highway and fruit carrying trucks from Kashmir head out for the rest of the country.

Amit Shah says battle against drugs delicately poised, asks states to join hands

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said the battle against drugs was delicately poised and urged states to fight the menace together with the Central Government, keeping aside politics.
Responding to a short-duration discussion in the Lok Sabha on the drug-abuse problem in the country and steps taken by the government to control it, Shah said the Modi Government has zero tolerance policy towards drugs and vowed to put behind bars drug traders, howsoever big, in the next two years.
“We have mapped the drug network across the states. No matter how big the criminal is, in the next two years there will be a situation that they will be behind bars,” Shah said.
He said the issue of drug menace is a serious one as profits from this trade are also used to finance the acts of terror.
He said the presence of dirty money also destroys economy and the Government will leave no stone unturned in achieving the target of drugs free India.
Shah said Rs 97,000 crore worth drugs were destroyed between 2014 and 2022 while Rs 23,000 crore drugs were seized between 2006 and 2013 and the Government will carry forward its campaign against drugs with gusto.
On the seizure of 3,000 kg drugs in Gujarat, he said it was a reflection of the State Government’s pro-active action against the menace. He said all those involved in the smuggling of the drugs were arrested.
The source of drugs was traced to some Gulf countries and action has been taken to ensure that the factories have been shut down, he said, adding the consignment was seized due to the scientific surveillance mounted by the Customs department and allied agencies.
Referring to the row over the powers given to the border guarding forces to register cases along the international borders, the home minister said those who were making political issues out of it were supporters of drug trade.

Infiltration stopped to great extent, says J&K DGP Singh

Director General of Jammu and Kashmir police, Dilbag Singh on Wednesday said infiltration to a large extent has been stopped and almost all cases of target killings have been solved.

Talking to reporters in Pulwama, DGP said security arrangements on border so as to foil any attempt of infiltration are very effective and to a large extent infiltration has been checked and some attempts were made but infiltrators were killed.

He also said that almost all cases of target killing have been solved and just one or two cases are pending in which involved persons have been identified and very soon pending cases will be closed too.

The DGP also said a large number of cases have been registered against drug peddlers and more than 2000 persons have been arrested.

He said among them many were slapped with PSA and strict action against is being taken so as to curb this menace.

He said earlier people were killed with bullet but now people are being killed with drugs here as whosoever uses it once searches for it again and again.

“Attempts are being to drop drugs through drones especially in Jammu region, however, every effort is being made to curb this menace,” the DGP said.

Meanwhile, while talking to reporters in Tral area, he said that “he would like to congratulate the people and youth in particular for not opting the path of terror and choosing peace and prosperity”.

He said that Tral is almost militancy free now and has become an abode of peace. “Youth must continue this path as those who chose the wrong path never came back,” he said.

 

 

 

40 percent of 177 central forces personnel attained martyrdom in J&K in 3 years: MHA in Rajya Sabha

Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai Wednesday informed the Rajya Sabha that out of 177 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) personnel, who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty from 2019 to 2021, 73 lost their lives in Jammu and Kashmir.

Quoting a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, a local news agency reported that 177 CAPFs personnel have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty in the last three years.

He said out of these a maximum of 73 personnel attained martyrdom in J&K, followed by 27 in Chhattisgarh.

Among the 73, he said, 49 were from CRPF, one from SSB, who attained martyrdom in 2019.

He said 20 including a BSF trooper were martyred in 2020 and 3 CRPF personnel were martyred n 2021.

‘Will burn Shah Rukh Khan alive’: Ayodhya seer

Seers from Ayodhya have now waded into the controversy over Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Pathaan’.

Mahant Paramhans Acharya of Tapasvi Chhavni, has said that he would even go to the extent of burning Shah Rukh Khan alive if he ever met him.

Paramhans Acharya added that the saffron colour has been insulted in the ‘Besharam Rang’ song.

“People of our Sanatan Dharma are protesting continuously regarding this. Today we have burnt the poster of Shahrukh Khan. If I get to meet Shah Rukh Khan, I will burn him alive,” the seer said.

Acharya did not stop at that. He went on to say that if ‘Pathaan‘ film was released in theatres, he would set them on fire.

He also appealed people to boycott ‘Pathaan’.

Earlier, the priest of Hanuman Garhi, Mahant Raju Das, had also protested against the film.

Politicians and other people are protesting over saffron coloured outfits in the song ‘Besharam Rang’ in the film.

J&K: Teenager killed, 10 injured in road accident

A 17-year-old girl died while at least ten other sustained injuries in a major road accident in Rafiabad area of Baramulla district on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

An official said that three vehicles collided and plunged into a Nallah in Rafiabad area today afternoon.

He said soon after the incident, a rescue operation was launched and the 11 injured were taken to the district hospital Baramulla, where one girl identified as Mehak Mohidin succumbed to her injuries.
