‘My world has ended’: Mother who lost both sons in Rajouri terror attack

Four years after she lost her husband to illness came a blow so devastating she might never recover.

Saroj Bala’s two sons were among the seven people killed when terrorists struck their village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district.

On Sunday, her 21-year-old son Prince Sharma lost his battle for life and died at Jammu’s Government Medical College hospital where he had been admitted with bullet injuries after the January 1 attack in Dhangri village.

New Year’s Day was also when his brother, 27-year-old Deepak, was killed when terrorists opened fire at their home.

The grief of losing her second son even as she was mourning the first has left her heartbroken.

“I have been left alone. Who will talk to me now? My world has ended.nI have lost everything in life,” the inconsolable Bala said as the mortal remains of her younger son were consigned to flames at the Dhangri cremation ground on Sunday.

Thousands of people joined her in mourning the death of the young man.

Terrorists had struck Dhangri late in the evening on January 1, targeting three homes before fleeing the scene.

They left behind an improvised explosive device (IED) that went off the next morning outside the Sharma house.

While Deepak and three others died on the first day, two children, Vihaan Kumar Sharma (four) and Samiksha Sharma (16), from the same family were killed in the IED explosion on day two.

Fifteen people were injured, including Prince.

Bala, who was just coming to terms with the death of her husband, said there is nothing to look forward too.

Her dreams of seeing her sons getting married and settling down in their jobs have crashed.

In a cruel twist of fate, Deepak, who had been selected for a job in the Indian Army’s ordnance department, was cremated last week Tuesday, the very day he was set to join his work in Leh.

Prince was serving in the Jal Shakti department, a job he landed following the death of his father Rajinder Kumar Sharma, an employee of the department who died four years ago.

“Both my sons would sit with me every day. We would have long discussions on family issues. My life has no value now. Everything has gone with the death of my children,” the despairing mother said.

Battling the grief of losing both her sons, the 58-year-old recalled the hardships faced by the family, especially during the treatment of her husband.

His disease had put a lot of pressure on her sons who made every effort to save him, she said.

“We were expecting good days ahead but the terrorists snatched all our happiness.”

The grieving woman remembered how she cooked for her sons, how she made their beds and the many hours they spent planning a better future for the family.

Sushil Kumar, her nephew, said the extended family kept the news of Prince’s death from her as long as they could.

She had been waiting for Deepak’s ashes to take them to Haridwar and came to know that Prince had died too only when his body reached the village Sunday afternoon.

“Even we cannot share her pain… the terrorists did not think once before targeting innocent civilians and devastating many families,” Kumar said.

The Karnataka Police arrested a couple and their friend for allegedly killing a man and dumping his body near the NICE Road in Bengaluru.

The victim was identified as Nibashish Paul, 32, a native of Assam who worked in Bengaluru. The accused have been identified as Reena, 29, her husband Gangesh, 32, and his friend Bijoy Kumar, 28. Paul had an extra-marital relationship with Reena and was hacked to death on January 3 after he allegedly forced her to take up sex work, the police said.

Gangesh and Reena are Uttar Pradesh natives living in Bengaluru for many years, the police said. Ganesh worked as a painter and Reena in a garment factory. They have four children, the police added.

According to Electronic City police sources, Gangesh, an alcohol addict, was not coming home every day. Meanwhile, Reena developed an extramarital relationship with Paul. When Gangesh had gone to Uttar Pradesh for work, Reena shifted to Paul’s house. But after a few days, Paul started torturing her for money and forced her to do sex work to make money.

Reena informed Gangesh about her ordeal and they decided to kill Paul. On January 2, Gangesh went to the house where Reena and Paul stayed. They poisoned Paul’s food and after he consumed it, they strangulated him to death using a wire.

Gangesh called his friend Bijoy over the phone stating his child was unwell. Bijoy was shocked to see Paul’s body when he arrived at the place. Though Bijoy refused to be part of the plan, the couple pleaded with him and he agreed. Gangesh and Bijoy took Paul’s body on a Pulsar bike for around 6 km to dump it near the NICE Road, the police said.

Religious conversion a serious issue, should not be given political colour: SC

Observing that religious conversion is a serious issue which should not be given a political colour, the Supreme Court on Monday sought the assistance of Attorney General R Venkataramani on a plea seeking direction to the Centre and states to take stringent steps to control fraudulent religious conversions.

A bench of Justices M R Shah and C T Ravikumar asked Venkataramani to appear in the matter in which the petitioner sought a check on religious conversions through “intimidation, threatening, deceivingly luring through gifts and monetary benefits”, and assist as amicus curiae.

“We want your assistance also, AG. Religious conversions by force, allurement etc. There are ways and ways, anything by allurement, if that is happening, when what should be done? What are the corrective measures?” the bench said.

At the outset, senior advocate P Wilson, appearing for Tamil Nadu, called the petition a “politically motivated” PIL, insisting there was no question of such conversions in the state.

The bench took objection and remarked,” You may have different reasons to be agitated like this. Don’t convert court proceedings into other things. … We are concerned for the entire state. If it is happening in your state, it is bad. If not, good. Do not see it as targeting one state. Do not make it political.”

The court was hearing a petition filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking direction to the Centre and states to take tough steps to control fraudulent religious conversions.

The matter will be heard next on February 7.

Govt issues strict advisory for TV channels

The Government on Monday termed the television news coverage of cricketer Rishabh Pant’s road accident and some other crime stories “distasteful” and “heart wrenching” and asked them to strictly follow the programme code laid down under the relevant law.

In an advisory to all private satellite channels, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting cited the coverage of the cricketer’s car crash, airing of distressing images of dead bodies and thrashing of a five-year-old boy and said such reporting offended “good taste and decency”.

“…television channels have shown dead bodies of individuals and images/videos of injured persons with blood splattered around, people including women, children, and elderly being beaten mercilessly in close shots, continuous cries and shrieks of a child being beaten by a teacher, shown repeatedly over several minutes including circling the actions thereby making it even more ghastly, without taking the precaution of blurring the images or showing them from long shots,” read the advisory issued on Monday.

It also said the broadcasters had taken video clips and images from social media and “little effort has been made to modulate or attune or edit such clips so as to make it compliant and consistent with the spirit of the Programme Code.”

The ministry has “strongly advised” television channels to attune their systems and practices of reporting incidents of crime, accidents, and violence, including death, in conformity with the Programme Code laid under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act.
