OCT. 7, JAMMU Heavy rainfall in Jammu has dealt a significant setback to the region’s tourism sector. The ropeway connecting Pir Kho to Mahamaya, one of the city’s key attractions, has been completely destroyed by the recent downpour. Officials say there is little hope of it resuming operations anytime soon.

Following the torrential rains, floodwaters from the Tawi River reached up to the two-storey building of the ropeway project, causing extensive damage. The entire facility—including the park area, ticket counters, restaurant, and several glass cabins—has been wrecked, while the supporting pillars have also suffered major structural damage.

According to Jammu Ropeway authorities, an estimated ₹6 crore will be required to restore the project. A proposal has already been sent to the government for approval, and restoration work will begin once official permission and funding are granted.

The high-altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall, while the plains were lashed by heavy overnight rain, resulting in a considerable drop in the mercury.
A traffic department official said the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, was closed for vehicular movement on Tuesday morning due to landslides and shooting of stones at multiple locations between Udhampur and Banihal.
Road clearance agencies have been mobilised to make the road trafficable as soon as possible, the official said, adding that they are hopeful of clearing the traffic, which has been stopped at Nagrota in Jammu, by late afternoon.
