Kashmir ,Dec 13 : The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch Kashmir has filed a Chargesheet before the Hon’ble Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar, in case FIR No. 23/2025, against four accused individuals for their alleged involvement in a major land-sale fraud. After Eggs, Now Biscuits Under Scanner in J&K: PRIYAGOLD Butter Delite Declared Unsafe, Banned in Anantnag

Anantnag, Dec 12:In yet another alarming development on the food safety front, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have cracked down on a widely consumed biscuit brand after laboratory tests confirmed that it contains harmful levels of sulphites. Days after the controversy over adulterated eggs, the Food Safety Department in Anantnag has now prohibited the sale of PRIYAGOLD Butter Delite biscuits in the district, citing serious health concerns.

The action follows a detailed investigation by the Food Safety Officer of Anantnag, who procured a sample of the biscuit being sold locally under the brand name PRIYAGOLD Butter Delite (Batch No. E25KP02FB). The product, manufactured by M/s Surya Food & Agro Ltd., Noida, and marketed by the same company, was sent for testing to the National Food Laboratory, Ghaziabad.

According to the lab’s report (No. JK-665/DEC/25/786), dated December 5, 2025, the biscuit was found to contain sulphite content beyond the maximum permitted limit under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA) 2006. The presence of sulphites in excess quantities categorizes the product as unsafe for human consumption. Sulphites, commonly used as preservatives in processed foods, can trigger severe allergic reactions, respiratory issues, and other health complications, especially in sensitive individuals.

The findings prompted immediate regulatory action. Invoking the powers under Section 36(3)(b) of the FSSA, Designated Officer (Food Safety) Anantnag Sheikh Zameer Ahmad issued an order banning the sale, distribution, and storage of the said biscuit across the district until further notice. The official order clearly states that consumption of food containing sulphites above the permissible limit “may pose a threat to the health of consumers,” and therefore its sale stands strictly prohibited.

This development comes at a time when public confidence in food safety standards is already shaken due to recent reports about adulterated eggs circulating in parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The consecutive actions involving eggs and now biscuits have raised serious concerns about the quality of packaged and processed foods available in local markets.

The Food Safety Department has urged traders, wholesalers, and retailers to comply with the order and immediately withdraw the product from their shelves to avoid penal action. Consumers have also been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious food items to the authorities.

Officials say intensified market inspections will continue in the coming days as part of a broader crackdown on unsafe food products in the region.

Urges Elected Govt to intervene, calls for transfer of Kashmiri detainees back to Jammu & Kashmir

Srinagar, December 12, 2025 : Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir, Dr Molvi Mohammad Umar Farooq, while speaking at the Friday congregation at Jama Masjid Srinagar, said that there is deep concern among people over the developments taking place in which individuals are being arrested in connection with decades-old cases. This has created a lot of anxiety and uncertainty, especially among those persons and their families who have long since disengaged from past paths. Mirwaiz said already thousands of Kashmiri prisoners are languishing in jails in and outside J&K, some for decades, causing immense suffering to their families, arresting more and more people only adds to the woes and pain of Kashmiris.

Drawing attention to the serious humanitarian and legal concerns arising from the continued detention of Kashmiris in prisons outside the Union Territory, Mirwaiz said that such practices often result in delays in trial proceedings and severely limit family access, running contrary to basic principles of humane treatment and natural justice.

Urging the State Government to intervene, Mirwaiz called for a review of the handling of such old cases and appealed for the transfer of detainees back to Jammu & Kashmir to ensure a fairer, faster, and more compassionate process of justice. He also appealed to them to intervene and stop the continuing process of arrests and detention of individuals who have moved on and are not associated with any form of violence in decades.

SMC Seals Humhama Guest House Over Major Building Violations

Srinagar, Dec 12: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has sealed a multi-storey guest house in Humhama after uncovering major construction violations, including an illegally raised additional floor and over 768 sq ft of unauthorised built-up area.

The action has been taken against Parvaiz Ahmad Wani and others, who were granted permission in July 2022 to construct a basement-plus-four-storey guest house. Officials said the permit holders not only exceeded the sanctioned structural limits but also continued construction despite a High Court status quo order.

SMC records show that the Corporation had earlier issued show-cause and demolition notices under Section 253(1) of the J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000. The owners challenged the demolition order before the J&K Special Tribunal, which on December 2, 2024 refused to grant interim relief, noting that the additional floor constituted a major violation.

The matter later reached the High Court of J&K and Ladakh, which on December 10, 2024, stayed both the Tribunal’s order and the demolition notice. However, the SMC said the construction continued in deliberate defiance of law, prompting the Corporation to issue a sealing show-cause notice in August 2025. The reply submitted was found “devoid of merit.”

A subsequent inspection by the Enforcement Officer (South) on November 12, 2025 confirmed significant deviations from the sanctioned plan, including a fully constructed, unauthorised fourth floor.

Exercising powers under the J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000 and the J&K Unified Building Bye-Laws, 2021, the SMC Commissioner ordered the immediate sealing of the structure.

The premises have been placed under the Superdari of the SHO Humhama Police Station and the Ward Officer (Ward 33), who have been directed to maintain the sealed status and report any breach without delay.

New Delhi: In a major policy decision, the Central Government has decided to rename the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) 2005. The flagship rural employment scheme will now be known as the Pujya Bapu Grameen Rozgar Guarantee Bill 2025.

According to official sources, the decision aims to bring a refreshed identity to the rural employment guarantee programme while retaining its core purpose of providing livelihood support to rural households across India.

The scheme, originally launched in 2005 as MGNREGA, guarantees 100 days of wage employment to every rural household willing to undertake unskilled manual work. Over the years, it has become a critical support system for the rural workforce, especially during economic slowdowns and crises.

The government is expected to introduce the updated bill during the upcoming parliamentary session. Key features of the programme—such as guaranteed employment days, timely wage payments, and transparency mechanisms—are likely to remain intact, while new reforms may be incorporated to improve efficiency and accountability.

More details on the revised implementation framework and funding model are expected to be announced by the Ministry of Rural Development in the coming days.

The administration has been focusing on boosting tourism infrastructure and improving access to remote destinations, and the launch of this helicopter service is seen as part of that larger development plan.

The B-3 helicopter, known for its high-altitude performance, is capable of operating in challenging terrains, making it ideal for Ladakh’s difficult mountainous landscape.

Govt Counters Rahul Gandhi, Says 5 of 8 Picks From Disadvantaged Sections

New Delhi, Dec 12: Government sources have countered Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks regarding the latest appointments to the Central Information Commission (CIC), stating that five of the eight shortlisted candidates belong to disadvantaged communities, including SC, ST, OBC, minority and women categories.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had reportedly recorded his dissent during a meeting of the high-level selection committee — comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and himself — held on Wednesday to finalise the next Chief Information Commissioner and eight Information Commissioners.

However, sources said the committee finalised eight names, and the Centre ensured representation from diverse sections: one SC, one ST, one OBC, one minority candidate, and one woman among the eight shortlisted.
They emphasised that five of the eight candidates recommended for the Information Commissioner posts are from disadvantaged groups.

Sources further highlighted that from 2005 to 2014, during the UPA tenure, no SC/ST individual was appointed as either CIC member or chief. The NDA government, they noted, appointed Suresh Chandra (ST) in 2018, and in 2020, appointed Heeralal Samariya (SC) as Information Commissioner, who later became the first-ever Chief Information Commissioner from the SC community in 2023.
