Earthquake of magnitude 6.1 kills several people

At least five people were killed and 19 injured when a strong earthquake shook southern Iran early Saturday, the state news agency IRNA reported.

The 6.0 magnitude quake hit 100 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of the port city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province, the US Geological Survey said. The quake struck just a minute after a 5.7 tremor.

Hormozgan governor Mahdi Dosti said the quakes killed five people and injured 19 others, IRNA reported.

Dosti said most of the damage occurred in the village of Sayeh Khost, close to the epicentre.

One person was killed in November last year when Hormozgan province was hit by twin 6.4 and 6.3 magnitude quakes.

Situated on the edge of several tectonic plates and crossing various fault lines, Iran is an area of strong seismic activity.

Iran’s deadliest quake was a 7.4 magnitude tremor that struck in 1990, killing 40,000 people in the north of the country.

WhatsApp banned over 19 lakh Indian accounts

Meta-owned WhatsApp banned over 19 lakh Indian accounts in May on the basis of complaints received from users via its grievances channel and through its own mechanism to prevent and detect violations, as per the latest monthly report published by the messaging platform.

The new IT rules which came into effect last year mandate large digital platforms (with over 50 lakh users) to publish compliance reports every month, mentioning the details of complaints received and action taken.

“As captured in the latest monthly report, WhatsApp banned over 1.9 million accounts in the month of May,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said.

The user-safety report has details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as its own preventive actions to combat abuse on the platform, the spokesperson added.

An Indian account is identified via the +91 phone number prefix.

According to the report released on Friday, 19.10 lakh Indian accounts were banned by WhatsApp between May 1 and May 31, 2022 using the “abuse detection approach, which also includes action taken in furtherance to negative feedback received from users…” In comparison, the messaging platform had banned over 16 lakh accounts of Indian users in the month of April, and 18.05 lakh such accounts in March.

“Over the years, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts, and in processes, in order to keep our users safe on our platform,” the spokesperson further said.

As many as 528 grievance reports were received, and 24 accounts were “actioned” during May 2022. Out of the total reports received, 303 pertained to ‘ban appeal’ while others were in the categories of account support, product support and safety, among others.

“We respond to all grievances received except in cases where a grievance is deemed to be a duplicate of a previous ticket. An account is ‘actioned’ when an account is banned or a previously banned account is restored, as a result of a complaint,” the report said.

The government is in the midst of finalising new social media rules that propose to give users a grievance appeal mechanism against arbitrary content moderation, inaction, or takedown decisions of big tech companies.

The IT ministry, last month, circulated the draft rules that propose a government panel to hear user appeals against inaction on complaints made, or against content-related decisions taken by grievance officers of social media platforms.

At present, “there is no appellate mechanism provided by intermediaries nor is there any credible self-regulatory mechanism in place”, the ministry had said.

Big social media firms have drawn flak in the past over hate speech, misinformation and fake news circulating on their platforms. Concerns have also been raised about digital platforms acting arbitrarily in pulling down content, and ‘de-platforming’ users.

The government had last year notified IT rules to make digital intermediaries more accountable and responsible for content hosted on their platforms

Over 200 high-powered bulletproof vehicles on job in J-K amid high threat for Amarnath Yatra

As Amarnath Yatra has started after a gap of two years amid high threat, 200 high-powered bulletproof vehicles are placed in sensitive locations along with security forces to detect explosives as well as other tasks to ensure safe and secure pilgrimage.

These vehicles, an official said on request for anonymity, are equipped with a high-powered automatic mapping facility, and the ability to move easily on planes, forests, water as well as places on heights.

Besides, the official said, the key specialization of these vehicles is to detect Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Many of the 200 vehicles have “Deep Penetrating Radar (DPR) to detect IEDs on routes connecting Srinagar and Jammu to Amarnath.

“If under attack, these vehicles cannot be damaged from the explosion of IED weighing nearly 25 kg,” claimed the official.

Amid the latest threat inputs regarding the use of grenades, sticky bombs, and IEDs; the security forces have been using these vehicles too along with high-tech gadgets, said the official.

The official said that these vehicles were pressed into Jammu and Kashmir in the last few months considering the 43-day Amarnath Yatra that started on Thursday under high-security arrangements as intelligence reports suggest a high threat to the annual pilgrimage that would culminate on August 11.

Security has also been tightened in Jammu and Kashmir with special emphasis on the use of over 130 sniffer dogs on the vehicle routes heading towards the Amarnath shrine.

The National Investigation Agency also informed the Central government last week that Pakistan-based commanders of proscribed terrorist organisations are trying for terrorist activities by way of targeting minorities, security personnel and religious pilgrimages including holy Shri Amaranthji Yatra, Shri Vaishno Devi Yatra and other similar religious activities.

Considering threats, over 200 drones are being used on twin routes of Pahalgam and Baltal to keep a tab on each and every activity said the official, adding major threat is suspected from cadres of offshoots of proscribed terrorist organisations such as “The Resistance Front (TRF), People Anti-Fascist Forces (PAFF)”.

The investigation has unearthed a deep-rooted conspiracy of Pakistan-based proscribed terrorist organisations joining hands in form of a united group and shifting their modus operandi by floating pseudo offshoot outfits portrayed as indigenous resistance groups, in whose name terrorist acts are being committed with an intention to claim deniability at the international level.

After the abrogation of article 370, this shift was discernible in claims of terrorist acts done in J&K. Many affiliate or offshoot outfits such as The Resistance Front (TRF), People Against Fascist Forces (PAFF), United Liberation Front J&K ULF J&K, Muslim Janbaaz Force (MJF), Kashmir Janbaaz Force (KJF), Kashmir Tigers, Kashmir Fight, Mujahideen Gazwat-ul-Hind, Kashmir Gaznavi Force etc had suddenly mushroomed, laying claims to various terrorist acts.

As per another official, there is an intelligence report regarding the use of sticky bombs of a minimum of half kg and attack of grenades.

The official said that the terrorists are learnt to have started gathering at launching pads along the border on the Pakistan side and they are suspected to enter through riverine areas, and tunnels during the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage which is scheduled to culminate on August 11.

Almost double the companies of all security forces have been deployed in Jammu and Kashmir compared to the previous year for the security of Amarnath Yatra.

High-tech gadgets like IED detectors and binoculars are being used “first time” during the annual pilgrimage of Hindus, the official said, adding “these gadgets include some of them manufactured by Israel”.

For the first time, another officer in the CRPF said, an “integrated” effort is being put across all forces concerned including Army, CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Jammu and Kashmir administration and Amarnathji Shrine Board members.

The Amarnath shrine pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine of Lord Shiva, located in the upper reaches of the Himalayas, is held from the twin routes of Pahalgam and Baltal.

The J&K government had cancelled the annual Amarnath pilgrimage due to the prevailing Covid-19 situation in 2020 and 2021 after a discussion with Amarnathji Shrine Board members.
