As the annual Amarnath yatra is underway, the Indian Army reconstructed the bridges overnight on the Baltal route in a record time after they were washed away on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

Chinar Corps of the Indian Army is assisting the civil administration in terms of security and smooth conduct of the Shri Amarnath Yatra which started on June 30. Bridges were washed away due to landslides following a sudden increase in temperature which resulted in swelling of Nalas near Kalimata on the Baltal route.

“On 01 Jul, 02 bridges near Brarimarg on #Baltal Axis were damaged by landslides. #ChinarCorps mobilised assets & reconstructed the bridges overnight for resumption of route & avoiding an over 4 hour detour by #Yatris,” Chinar Corps tweeted. “The Baltal route is the responsibility of the Counter Insurgency Force – KILO. On the night of June 30/July 1 due to a sudden increase in temperature which resulted in swelling of Nalas near Kalimata on the Baltal route, the bridges at kalamata were washed away,” the Army said in a press release.

Civil administration requisitioned Chinar Corps for restoration of destroyed bridges. In a quick response to the call, Chinar Corps` Kilo Force coordinated the entire effort and mobilised resources including induction of bridging stores by helicopter, mules, porters and manually by engineer regiment which also mobilised technical experts to resuscitate the fallen bridge.

“In a record time frame, the 13 Engineer Regiment of Chinar Corps laid entirely a new bridge in the night against heavy odds of weather and darkness. This resulted in a smooth recommencement of yatra and instilled a sense of safety and security among pilgrims. The act once again established that the Indian Army can deliver anywhere, anytime,” read the release.

The Amarnath Yatra is a pilgrimage to a 3,880-metre-high cave shrine of Lord Shiva, located in the upper reaches of the Himalayas.

As Amarnath Yatra has started after a gap of two years amid high threat, 200 high-powered bulletproof vehicles are placed in sensitive locations along with security forces to detect explosives as well as other tasks to ensure safe and secure pilgrimage.

After serving them Halwa, the local muslims garlanded the pilgrims and wished them safe and blissful journey.

A pilgrim Sanjeev Rathore said, “After a decade I am going for Amarnath Yatra and I never thought we would be welcomed with such warmth by the people of Jammu. I feel so happy to be welcomed by a muslim fellowmen and I am thankful to them for organising this sweet feast for us.”

Moreover, another devotee added that he didn’t expect to receive such a welcome in the land of Sage Rishi, the philosophy is ‘Vasudheva Kutumbakam’. He prayed for safe and happy journey.

Pervaiz Waffa a local youth PDP leader revealed that such events are being organised for Amarnath devotees every year  in Jammu in order to aid an auspicious and blissful pilgrimage. As a nation we need to maintain communal peace and harmony despite some elements trying to create communal tensions, we should not let them succeed in their plans.

Mr Waffa opined, “Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Issai hain sab Bhai Bhai”  slogans that signifies brotherhood among the different communities should not be restricted to sloganeering only but must be practiced and implemented in its true sense.

A local Advocate Amjad Khan said, “Every year we used to organise such langars (community kitchen) for the Amarnath pilgrims but due to covid for past two years we were not able to. Our country is diverse in nature so many people from different religions and castes live here but some people want to disturb our communal harmony and by organising this langar we want to spread a message of communal harmony and love across the country”.

He further appealed the local govt to punish such miscreants who are provoking innocent people to create communal tensions.
