Protest held in Jammu demanding justice in Dr Sumedha murder case
A massive protest was held yesterday evening at Gol Puli in Talab Tillo area on City outskirts, demanding early justice for the victim of ‘Love Jihad’, Dr Sumedha, who was allegedly murdered by her friend Johar Mahmood Ganai.
People from various religious bodies, civil society, parents and relatives of Dr Sumedha Sharma and locals participated in the protest demonstration and put forward their demand to hang the culprit. The protesters were raising loud slogans demanding early justice for Dr Sumedha. They demanded that the trial against the accused be run in fast track court.

While addressing the protestors, Ram Pal Sharma said that there is anger in the society after the revelations in the 1249-page charge sheet. The main reason for this anger was the disclosure in the charge sheet that murder accused Johar Mahmood Ganai, apart from Dr Sumedha, was also making another Hindu girl a victim of ‘Love Jihad’ and when Dr Sumedha revealed this, Johar murdered her. In the chargesheet, police also revealed that Dr Sumedha’s murder was gruesome and pre-planned.
Protesters including parents of late Dr Sumedha said her family will not get justice unless the murder accused is given death sentence. They said that for justice, the concerned administration should arrange for a special government lawyer for the aggrieved party along with hearing of the case in a fast track court otherwise they will not get justice. The protesters also demanded the Lieutenant Governor to enact a stringent law to curb the increasing cases of ‘Love Jihad’.
The protest which lasted for about one hour badly disrupted the vehicular movement on busy Talab-Tillo Road and the traffic had to be diverted from alternative route. SHO of Police Station Nowabad, Inspector Surinder Raina reached the spot and pacified the protesting people while assuring that the Police will ensure stringent punishment to the culprit.
It is noteworthy that on March 7 this year, on the day of Holi, Dr Sumedha was murdered by Johar Mahmood Ganai in his house in Pamposh Colony under the jurisdiction of Janipur police station. The accused had brutally killed Dr Sumedha by stabbing her several times with a 10-inch big meat cutting knife.
