Samba, July 15: Many members of the Safai Karamchari union held protest demonstration in Samba in support of their demands.

While raising slogans like ‘take back SRO 132, implement SRO 64, we demand our rights and are not begging’, the anguished sanitation workers of Samba protested against the local administration, yesterday.

One of the protestors said, “We want the local regime to cancel the SRO 132 immediately as it says that a safai karamchari must be literate and should hold the minimum qualification of 8th or 10-12th standards respectively, but as a matter of fact most of the safai karamcharis are not literate and if the administration want to appoint literate and educated sanitation workers, then why don’t they appoint them from the colleges and universities directly. This ruling is utter injustice to us.’’

They appealed to the government to take back SRO 132 and regularise all the local sanitation workers under SRO 64 immediately. They further alleged that they did their work religiously and maintained cleanliness throughout the Amarnath yatra but the administration rewarded them with such unfair rulings and policies.
