FIR Registered, Accused Arrested After Attack on Kashmiri Youth

In a swift response to the brutal assault on an 18-year-old Kashmiri boy in the Vikas Nagar area of Uttarakhand, the matter has been taken up at the highest level with the state police leadership. Following the intervention, Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP) Deepam Seth has assured strict and time-bound action in the case.
According to official information shared by the DGP, the Uttarakhand Police has taken strong and serious note of the incident. An FIR bearing No. 26/2026 has been registered at Vikas Nagar Police Station against Sanjay Yadav and one other individual under Sections 117(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The prime accused, Sanjay Yadav, has already been taken into custody, and legal proceedings are currently underway.
Senior police officials have confirmed that investigations have been initiated without delay and that all necessary legal steps are being followed to ensure justice for the victim. The DGP has further assured that the authorities will adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards any act of communal intimidation, violence, or harassment.
He emphasized that the Uttarakhand Police remains committed to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and security of Kashmiri students and citizens, as well as all individuals residing or working in the state. “The strongest possible action will be taken to prevent such incidents from recurring,” the DGP reportedly stated, underlining the administration’s resolve to maintain communal harmony and law and order.
While the registration of the FIR and arrest of the accused is being seen as a welcome first step, voices from civil society and the Kashmiri community have stressed that accountability must be transparent, exemplary, and time-bound. They have cautioned that acts of communal profiling, mob violence, and intimidation — particularly against vulnerable communities and those earning an honest and dignified livelihood — cannot be allowed to become normalized.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the safety of Kashmiri youth living outside the Union Territory for education and employment. Observers say the manner in which this case is concluded will send an important message about the rule of law and the state’s commitment to protecting minorities and upholding constitutional values.
