Load carrying trucks from Jammu to Kashmir and vice-versa have been halted since the Jammu-Srinagar Highway has experienced a huge amount of snowfall and is closed. Due to this, the drivers have to wait for 3-4 days continuously on the Highway and have complained about lack of food, water and washroom and several other problems they face on daily basis.
Sohaib, a driver from Sopore said “This is not the first time we’re facing these issues. We’re habitual now. It’s been 4 days since we are standing here with our respective trucks. There’s no water. We’ve to borrow it from others. Rice plate which costs around 30 bucks is given to us for 40-50 bucks. This is not correct! Some of us are finished with our savings. We work for Government, are standing here in extreme cold and surviving with great difficulty and getting no help from it. At least water tanks should be provided to us.”
“We’re troubled. There are live stocks in the trucks like vegetables. Capitalists aren’t listening to us. They call us 4 times a day asking whereabouts of the stock. What should we do? Are we responsible for the bad weather? The biggest problem for us is the lack of washrooms. There’s not even a single washroom here. This is a Highway, everything here is costly plus the road a dangerous. Even if one of us dies or gets hurt by an accident, no one will come to know. Moreover, who’ll be responsible for it?” added the other.
The drivers have requested for some basic facilities like food, water and washrooms from the Government.
