Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Thursday announced a three-month extension for the registration of Waqf properties and Mutawallis on the national Waqf portal, citing technical issues that were recently identified in the system. The decision comes after multiple stakeholders and State authorities flagged difficulties in completing the mandatory digital registration process within the earlier deadline.
Addressing the media, the Minister said that the Ministry had noticed certain “issues and inconsistencies” in the portal’s functioning, which affected smooth uploading of property details by Mutawallis and State Waqf Boards. “Some technical issues were detected, and therefore it was necessary to extend the deadline to ensure that all stakeholders are able to complete the process without hurdles,” Rijiju said.
Despite the glitches, the portal has registered significant progress, with over 1.50 lakh Waqf properties successfully updated so far, marking a major step in the government’s ongoing effort to bring transparency and accountability to Waqf management through digitisation.
Rijiju highlighted that several States, particularly Karnataka, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir, have shown strong performance in uploading their property data on time. “These States have done a commendable job in enlightening, updating, and digitising their Waqf properties on the portal,” he noted.
The Minister confirmed that the Ministry had received numerous formal requests from Mutawallis and State Boards seeking an extension of the upload deadline. Many argued that the ongoing verification and documentation process required additional time, especially for older or disputed properties.
“In view of the requests received from Mutawallis and to ensure that no one is left out of the digitisation drive, the Government has decided to give an additional three months for registration and uploading property details,” Rijiju announced.
He reiterated that the objective of the portal is to create a fully transparent, accessible, and centralised record of all Waqf properties in the country, eliminating ambiguity and strengthening institutional oversight. “The aim is complete digitisation. We want every Waqf property in India to be accounted for, mapped, and updated on the system,” he said.
The Ministry maintains that the extended window will not only help rectify technical issues but also ensure wider compliance, allowing Mutawallis across the country the opportunity to complete the process without further delays.
