LEH : A Large number of students from Leh and Kargil here on Thursday held protest demanding separate university in the Ladakh region of the state.
Student leaders hailing from these twin districts highlighted the problems being faced by the students of Ladakh region in Jammu University as well as in Kashmir University.
More than 15 thousands Ladakhi students are studying in Jammu due to lack of good educational facilities here as the result students are facing various challenges and forced to stay away from home.
Demanding a university in Ladakh, protesting students said that there are seven universities each in Srinagar and Jammu but on the other side Ladakh with total area of 58 percent of J&K land area is left without any university.
They said, “In Jammu and Kashmir we have almost 8 universities distributed among Jammu and Kashmir without even a single university for Ladakh, which is discrimination on the part of authorities.”
The lack of higher educational facilities has kept Ladakh economically backward, said protesters.
The protesters appealed authorities to look into the demand of opening separate university so that maximum numbers of the students from the Ladakh region are benefited.
Carrying placards and banners, a large number of Ladakhi students assembled near the Jammu University campus and then marched towards Bikram Chowk in the form of a procession.
They were raising slogans in support of their demand. The protest march was also addressed by the student leaders, who gave reasons in support of their demand. They also vowed to continue the peaceful struggle till their demand is conceded by the Government.
