The anti-polythene squad of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has seized one quintal of polythene bags from several parts of Srinagar city.
An official statement issued today said that the SMC imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on numerous shopkeepers for stocking and selling goods in polythene and shoppers carrying polythene bags while shopping.
“The squad inspected Karan Nagar, Batamaloo, Lal Chowk, Jehangir Chowk and other areas,” it said.
It said the SMC Commissioner Riyaz Ahmd Wani, who holds fortnightly anti polythene review meetings with the polythene squad headed by Health Officer SMC Qazi Javaid has directed the concerned to intensify the campaign and make sure proper awareness is being simultaneously created besides conducting market checks and inspections.
“These drives shall be conducted regularly and all the vendors including the shoppers are requested to do away with the polythene for a healthier and safe environment,” said the Commissioner, according to the statement.
