Shivani Charak, ace sport climber of J&K, has been selected by Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi, the apex body for mountaineering and sport climbing in India, for representing the country in the forthcoming Asian Youth Championship to be held at Chongqing in China from November 1 to November 14, 2018.
She is not just another sportsperson but an inspiration to millions of young sportsperson in our country. She comes from a humble background and has faced financial difficulties, inadequate facilities and above all she has survived the deadly cancer and triumphed life’s race.
Shivani is among the 11 climbers including 5 boys selected from across the country to participate in various categories of this continental sport climbing competition. She along with Shreya Nanker and Arundhati, both from west zone, will vie for the honours in the Youth A Girls category.
Shivani was in PIG hospital, Chandigarh for 5 years for the treatment of cancer. She was successfully operated and resumed the practice after a period of one year after being treated successfully. She aims to win Gold medals for the country in the forthcoming Asian Youth Championship in China.
She is representing India in different climbing competitions but her main event is Speed Climbing. Speed climbing is one form of indoor rock climbing where athletes compete for the fastest time to the top of the climbing wall. The competition takes places on a standardized climbing wall. The wall is about 80 feet tall with holds to climb up.

Shivani Charak ranks 4th in India in speed climbing and the national record of Speed climbing is 7 second. She has a record of speed climbing in 12 second.
Talking to JK Media, she shares that right after her recovery from cancer, she started an intense practice and got selected for district and state climbing competitions where she excelled and based on her performance she was selected for zonal climbing championship where she clinched Gold medals. She has 10-15 Gold medals from zonal climbing competitions. She has not only represented J&K state on a national level but also represented India on international level as well.
She has recently participated in Thailand for a speed climbing Championship and secured 11th position internationally. She has represented India in Italy and Switzerland. She has won plenty of Gold, silver and bronze medals in her 4 year career.
Shivani said that she is blessed to have full support from her family and her coach but also expressed her concern on the unavailability of the required equipment which is the climbing wall needed for the practice. There is only one 40 feet climbing wall in Apple Kids School in Jammu where she is allowed to practice. She has to go to Delhi every time before a championship for a professional practice. She reiterated that it will save a lot of time which she could utilize for practice.
She voiced the importance of the equipments as it will help the youth of J&K to realize their potential and more and more could join with the sport and win medals for the state and India.
