Rising Drug Addiction In Kashmir

Recently a hospital released a report of drug addiction in Kashmir and according to the report in the past 5-6 years, opium addiction only has increased to nearly 85% in the valley. Last year during the lockdown it was expected that the figures would see a drop but that didn’t happen. Despite the Centre’s rehabilitation policies, the establishment of rehabilitation centers, and JK Police’s operations to end the menace, drug addiction has increased in Kashmir.

The most surprising thing in the report is people between 12-35 years of age which includes students from 9th to Masters are addicted to drugs. Many experts believe that people between 20-35 years are involved in drugs because of unemployment, loneliness, family issues, and pressure from society. During 2015-16 when the rehabilitation center was established in Kashmir many believed that through counseling the drug addiction will come down but that also didn’t happen. Everyday drugs whose price in the international market is in crores are being recovered at the Lakhanpur border.

The growing drug addiction has raised the question that is Kashmir slowly opting the drug menace like Punjab?
