Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Police have ordered a preliminary inquiry after a local cricketer was allegedly seen wearing a helmet displaying a foreign political symbol during a privately organised cricket match in Jammu, officials said.
According to police officials, a video that surfaced on social media showed the cricketer participating in a local league match on the outskirts of Jammu city. The visuals drew attention due to the display of a symbol linked to an ongoing international conflict, raising concerns over its possible public order implications.
Taking note of the matter, police initiated a time-bound preliminary inquiry at Domana Police Station to ascertain the factual position. Officials said the inquiry will examine the circumstances under which the helmet was worn, the intent behind it, and whether the act violated any legal provisions.
Police clarified that a preliminary inquiry is a procedural step and does not automatically translate into the registration of a criminal case. “The objective is to establish facts and assess whether further legal action is required,” an official said, adding that the inquiry will be conducted strictly as per law.
Sources indicated that the match was part of a local cricket league involving privately formed teams and was not conducted under the banner of any recognised cricketing body. The player in question is said to belong to South Kashmir and was participating as part of a visiting team during the fixture.
The issue also triggered political reactions after a senior political leader from Jammu and Kashmir shared her views on social media, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian cause. The post generated significant online discussion, with supporters and critics engaging in sharp exchanges.
However, police officials maintained that political reactions or social media debates would have no bearing on the inquiry. “Law enforcement functions independently. Our focus is limited to facts, legality, and maintaining public order,” a senior officer said.
Legal experts note that authorities often resort to preliminary inquiries in cases where actions in public spaces may have wider social or security implications. Such inquiries help determine whether intent, context, and consequences warrant further investigation.
The incident has once again underlined the sensitivity surrounding the use of political symbols in sporting events, particularly in regions with complex security dynamics.
Police have urged the public to refrain from speculation and misinformation, stating that conclusions should be drawn only after the inquiry is completed. Any further steps, officials said, will depend entirely on the findings of the inquiry report.
