Panic grips people as strong earthquake hits J&K

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale hit Amritsar in Punjab on late Friday night. Strong tremors could be felt across north India in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, the Delhi-NCR and Uttarakhand.
As per the National Centre for Seismology under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, the epicentre of the earthquake was in Amritsar.
The earthquake occurred at 10.34 pm at 31.57 N latitude and 75.09 E longitude. The ministry added that the earthquake had a depth of 10 Km.
Initial reports suggest the earthquake in Amritsar coincided with a stronger earthquake that struck Tajikistan at about the same time. The magnitude of the Tajikistan earthquake was reportedly 7.1 on the Richter Scale.
