Growers warn of valley-wide strike; ask elected government to resign if it cannot save fruit industry, emotional scenes at Sopore Mandi

Sopore, Sep 15 : Fruit mandis across Kashmir observed a complete shutdown on Monday in protest against the government’s failure to ensure the smooth movement of fruit-laden trucks. Growers warned of a valley-wide strike if the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway is not fully restored within two days.

Emotional scenes unfolded at Asia’s second-largest Fruit Mandi in Sopore, where growers with tearful eyes pleaded for the survival of the industry.

Many orchardists broke down during the protest, lamenting that their year’s hard work was rotting in stranded trucks while the government “watched silently.”

Speaking at the protest, President Fayaz Ahmed Malik, accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of failing the people. “If the CM can’t ensure the passage of fruit trucks, he has no right to sit in office. Resign if you can’t do anything,” he thundered, adding that no MLA had spoken up for the growers.

Growers alleged that while trucks carrying iron and other commodities were being allowed to move, fruit-laden vehicles were deliberately held back.

Warning of an escalation, Malik stated that if the highway is not restored within 48 hours, growers will announce a valley-wide strike that could paralyze economic activity across the region.

It is worth mentioning that mandis across the Valley—including Sopore, Handwara, Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag, and others—remained shut as part of a two-day shutdown call on September 14 and 15.

Earlier, the fruit growers’ association reported that hundreds of trucks carrying perishable fruit consignments remain stranded on the highway and have not been allowed to proceed to their destinations, resulting in “massive damages and heavy losses” for growers.

“Mute spectator to a crisis”: Sajad Lone slams govt as Kashmir’s fruit industry bleeds

Srinagar, Sep 15 : Peoples Conference president Sajad Gani Lone on Monday slammed National Conference-led government over its handling of the ongoing crisis caused by disruptions on the Srinagar–Jammu national highway.

In a post on X, formerly twitter, Lone minced no words in castigating the government over hindrances in movement of apple trucks on the highway.

“The apples destined for the rest of the country are in a state of rot. Massive losses for the apple growers. I am sure there must be some remedial measures,” Lone said in post on X.

Lone criticized the administration’s inaction, saying that sitting like a mute spectator and doing nothing is criminal.

“Inclement weather is not fault of the government. But sitting like a mute spectator and doing nothing is criminal,” he said.

Lone also asked Omar Abdullah to work out a strategy for facilitating unhindered movement of trucks on the highway. “Stop wandering aimlessly across the country. Sit with your officers and stakeholders and work out a strategy,” he posted on X.

Lone’s remarks came as hundreds of trucks carrying apples remain stranded, triggering protests and shutdowns across fruit mandis in the Valley.

Growers have warned of a valley-wide strike if the situation is not resolved within 48 hours.

Shopian, Sept 14: The fruit mandi in Shopian has remained closed for the second consecutive day owing to the non-availability of transport and steep fare hikes, leaving apple growers distressed at the peak of the harvesting season.

Growers said apple consignments worth nearly Rs 30 crore are stranded, with eight-tyre trucks carrying fruit not being allowed to ply on the Mughal Road, which has become a major bottleneck for transportation.

According to traders, thousands of apple crates are lying unsold and unattended at the mandi, while growers fear heavy financial losses if the situation is not resolved immediately.

“Transportation charges have gone up abnormally, and even then trucks are not being allowed. Our fruit is perishable, and every passing hour adds to the losses,” said one of the growers.

The closure of the mandi has raised serious concern among orchardists who rely on timely dispatch of produce to markets outside Kashmir. They urged the authorities to intervene urgently and ensure hassle-free movement of fruit-laden trucks.

PSA always 'misused' against people of JK time to reconsider 'black law' says PDP's Waheed Para

Srinagar, Sep 14 : PDP MLA Waheed Para on Saturday said the Public Safety Act (PSA) has always been “misused” against the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and it is time to reconsider it seriously.

His remarks came in the backdrop of AAP MLA from Doda Mehraj Malik being detained under the stringent law, which allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases.

“The PSA has always been misused against the people of J&K. There is strong resentment against it among people and there is a need to stop its use. So, all the institutions should talk about it,” Para told reporters in Pulwama.

He said there is a need to reconsider the law and its application seriously.

Para termed Malik’s detention under the PSA “unfortunate”.

Political parties contested the assembly elections so that everyone would abolish this “black law” together. “However, it is a pity that we are not even discussing it,” the Pulwama MLA said.

Para said Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahin Rather issued a notification stating that Malik has been detained under the PSA but did not issue another to condemn it.

Calling on politicians to speak against the “misuse” of the law, the PDP leader said that at present, thousands of youths are in jails and if politicians holding important positions do not speak out on the issue, “then there is no point in public representation”.

On a question about his response to the Speaker’s show cause notice to him, Para said he will respond to it and if possible, he will also meet Rather.

The Speaker issued the notice to Para over his social media post claiming that the assembly secretariat endorsed Malik’s detention under the PSA.

Malik, who is also the chief of the AAP’s J&K unit, was detained on Monday for allegedly disturbing public order and was lodged in Kathua jail. His detention sparked violent protests in Doda, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory restrictions and snap mobile internet and broadband services in the district.

Investment scam: Court makes accused duo’s bail absolute

Srinagar, Sep 13 : A court here has made bail absolute to two accused persons in connection with the alleged fake investment scam wherein high returns were promised to investors.

The duo—Mubarak Ahmad Rather son of Nissar Ahmad Rather of Gulshan Nagar Gulposh Colony and Majid Nazir Najar son of Nazir Ahmad Najar, resident of Batamaloo—were arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the J&K Crime Branch in July this year.

Subsequently, Mubarak who works as Senior Sales Manager (SSM) in HDFC Defence Shaurya and Majid who works as Senior Shaurya Officer (SSO) in the same organisation moved bail application before the court. The duo was admitted to interim bail by the Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar on August 20 and subsequently same was extended from time to time and made absolute on September 8 in connection with case FIR No. 11/2025 under Section 420, 467, 468, 471, 120-B IPC of P/S EOW-S (Crime Branch Kashmir).

According to officials, the case was filed after the Crime Branch Kashmir received an online complaint, wherein it was alleged that the complainant has been duped, cheated by the two “fraudsters” namely Majid Nazir Najar and Mubarak Ahmad Rather who promised high returns on investment in Adarsh Cooperative Society, SBI Life insurance and HDFC Insurance companies and provided the complainant with deposit certificates.

However, during the investigation, the certificates were found to be fake and forged, the EOW said. The accused individuals, as per EOW, projected themselves as authorised representatives and agents working with various financial institutions and lured the complainant to make investments in various deposit schemes.

“The case was registered under relevant sections of law, and during the course of investigation, evidence confirmed the involvement of both the accused,” EOW said.

Omar Abdullah on India-Pakistan Asia Cup Clash: “Sport Should Rise Above Politics”

In a candid statement on the much-anticipated India-Pakistan match in the ongoing Asia Cup, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the complex interplay between sports and politics in the subcontinent.

Speaking on the issue, Abdullah said, “Our problem has always been with bilateral matches. I don’t think we ever had problems with multilateral tournaments. This game is part of a tournament. If things can move in a positive direction, there is nothing like it.”

He highlighted that cricket, often regarded as a unifying force across the region, has frequently been caught in political crossfires. “More often than not, sport becomes a victim of politics—nowhere is this truer than cricket in the subcontinent,” the Chief Minister remarked.

Abdullah further contextualized the sensitivities surrounding India-Pakistan sporting encounters by pointing to the realities in Jammu and Kashmir. “My part of the country has been a direct victim of terrorism for the last 30–35 years, and you cannot just wish that away,” he noted, stressing that the social and political environment shapes public perception and participation in such events.

Analysts suggest that multilateral tournaments like the Asia Cup provide a safer and more neutral platform for India-Pakistan clashes, as they reduce direct political pressures while still offering fans the excitement of one of the most-watched sporting rivalries in the world.

Omar Abdullah’s comments reflect a careful balance of optimism and realism, underlining that while sports can foster camaraderie and goodwill, decades of political tensions and conflict cannot be ignored. His remarks encourage a thoughtful approach to such encounters, advocating for dialogue, understanding, and the hope that cricket can transcend political barriers.

As millions of fans tune in to watch the India-Pakistan match, Abdullah’s perspective serves as a reminder of the broader realities shaping the beautiful game in the region.

Curfew Lifted in Nepal Life Slowly Returns to Normal

Kathmandu, Nepal – After five days of deadly violence and intense negotiations, the Nepali Army has lifted the curfew entirely this morning. No fresh notice regarding restrictions has been issued, signaling a return to normalcy across the country.

Streets in Kathmandu and other major cities are witnessing normal traffic movements for the first time in nearly a week. Residents are cautiously venturing out, while shops and markets are opening gradually. Local authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines as life slowly regains its routine.

The curfew had been imposed following clashes that resulted in multiple casualties and widespread unrest. Over the past few days, the government and security forces held hectic parleys to restore peace, while ensuring essential services continued to operate.

Though the immediate threat of violence has subsided, the atmosphere remains tense in some areas, with security personnel maintaining a visible presence. Analysts suggest that the situation will require continued monitoring to prevent any flare-ups.

For now, the lifting of the curfew marks a critical step toward stability, allowing businesses to reopen, students to resume studies, and the citizens of Nepal to reclaim a sense of normal life.
