22-yr-old cricketer breaks 141-year-old record

If the opening day of the action-packed Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener was all about Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling masterclass, Australia’s Todd Murphy hogged the limelight by staging an epic comeback for the visitors at Nagpur on Friday. Murphy made his Test debut alongside India’s Suryakumar Yadav and KS Bharat in the 1st Test of the four-match series. Leading the bowling attack of the Baggy Greens on a turning Nagpur pitch on Day 2 of the encounter, the Aussie youngster bagged a stunning five-wicket haul in the 1st innings at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.

Murphy’s selection has paid Australia rich dividends as the debutant bagged crucial wickets of KL Rahul (20), Cheteshwar Pujara (7), Virat Kohli (12), Srikar Bharat (8) and Ravichandran Ashwin (23) in the 1st Test of the four-match series. Rewriting history in the oldest and longest format of the game, Murphy has achieved a first in 141 years to record a remarkable feat against Rohit Sharma’s Team India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener at Nagpur.

Joining the likes of Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon on the list of Australian players with five-wicket hauls on debut, Murphy has become the 35th Aussie star to take a fifer in his first international appearance. Murphy has also become the first Australian spinner to secure a five-wicket haul before his 23rd birthday since 1882.

The 22-year-old is the youngest Australian spinner to take a 5-wicket haul on his Test debut. Murphy is one of four spinners named in Australia‘s Test squad for the high-profile series against hosts India. Murphy had played only seven first-class matches before his Test debut in the series opener between Australia and India on Thursday.

After Ravindra Jadeja-inspired India bowled out Australia for 177 in the 1st innings, Indian skipper Rohit slammed a sensational century on Day 2 of the Nagpur Test. Veteran opener Rohit has become the first Indian captain to score centuries in all three formats of the game. The senior batter smashed 120 off 212 balls in India’s first essay at Nagpur. Delivering the goods with the bat, all-rounder Jadeja slammed a sublime half-century as India extended its lead to over 100 runs before the end of the day’s play at Nagpur.

Situation in J&K has vastly changed in last 3 years: Anurag Thakur

Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday said that the situation has vastly changed in Jammu and Kashmir in the past three years, while places where stone pelting was common, they now have sports flourishing and budding players are also emerging there.

“If you see lights on at night, you will find Kashmiri youths practicing their sports. That’s how much the situation has changed in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said during the inaugural ceremony of 3rd Khelo India Winter Games at Gulmarg.

He said more than 1,500 players from 29 states and Union territories will take part in the 5-day mega event.

Thakur said sports not only was a unifying platform but also reflected the soft power of the country. “Sports is soft power. When a player wins an international medal, it unites the country. Gold medal by Neeraj Chopra ended India’s 121-year wait for athletics gold at the Olympics. This sparked celebrations across the country,” he said.

Thakur said last year was big for Indian sports as athletes from various fields excelled in their respective games at international events. “We had the highest medal tally at the Summer Olympics and Paralympics. P V Sindhu won back to back Olympic medals in badminton,” he added.

He said it is a moment of pride that what other states could not do J&K has done. “All districts of J&K have an indoor stadium and playgrounds have come up across the UT,” he said.

Thakur said Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants big sports Centres to come up so that sportspersons of the country can excel. “A sports university is coming up in Manipur and a Centre of Excellence in winter sports will soon come up in Gulmarg,” he said.

The minister said the situation has vastly changed in Jammu and Kashmir in the past three years. “Places where stone pelting was common, we now have sports flourishing and seeing budding players,” he said.

Several Pumps run out of petrol

Amid a severe economic crisis, most of the petrol pumps in the Punjab region of Pakistan ran out of petrol disrupting the routine life of people. In distant places where there have been no supplies for the pumps for more than a month, the situation is terrible, Dawn reported.

The lack of gasoline in Punjab remains despite assurances that there are an adequate supply and government threats to take harsh action against hoarders.

On the other side, the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) has blamed all Oil marketing companies (OMCs) for failing to ensure appropriate supplies in response to demand, leaving the pumps empty and forcing drivers to go for gas in urban areas, according to Dawn.

The OMC Association of Pakistan (OMAP), which rejected the claim, stated that some gas stations were participating in stockpiling gasoline and creating fake shortages in order to increase earnings in light of the anticipated hike in gasoline prices.

Amid severe fuel shortages due to the poor economy, several petrol pumps in major and small cities of Punjab have been closed, Dawn reported.

Kickstarting the 3rd Khelo India Winter Games at famous ski-resort Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Friday said Gulmarg is going to be the Centre of Excellence for the winter sports and efforts are on and soon “we will achieve the mission”.

Addressing the gathering during the inaugural ceremony of the 3rd edition of Khelo India Winter Games at Gulmarg, LG Sinha said that every effort is being made to bring the skills of J-K youth who are affiliated with the sports on a display as Gulmarg will soon be the Center of Excellence for the winter games.

While congratulating the organizers for making efforts in conducting the mega event, the LG said that it is a proud movement for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. “I convey my greetings to each member including the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, High Altitude Warfare School Jawahar Institute of mountaineering, J&K Sports council and those associated with the event,” he said.

He said Gulmarg will celebrate the sporting excellence on snow-covered slopes and will witness the contests of skill, courage and character of the athletes in as many as 11 disciplines. “We transform the sports tournament into a really spectacular event at Gulmarg.”

He said that the second Khelo India was a huge success and today on the 3rd National Winter Games event, the whole country is united, and the next five days are going to be a great occasion to strive for the greatest victory to uphold sportsmanship, equality, friendship and respect for the competitors.

“Sports is such a medium that can change everything and it will not change the athletes’ behavior but can change the whole scenario of the world. Just after three months, we are going to hold the G20 meeting in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

He also said Jammu and Kashmir top the sports infrastructure in the whole country as “we have stadiums and play fields in every village”. “Our country was deprived of the soft power of sports for the last 60 years but fortunately, the efforts of PM Modi paved the way and we are now at the stage of holding mega sports events. PM Modi gave the youth a Naya Asmaan and Naya Pankh,” he said.

The LG said that for the last 8-9 years the country has produced a number of sports heroes and it’s all because of PM Modi. “Sports can give a new birth to sustainable development and the Sports ministry left no stone unturned to make Jammu and Kashmir a Sports center of the country.”

The LG said J-K Sports Council is doing its best to promote the sports and have covered almost every district and every village.

The athletes are the role models for the youth across the country, we are looking for the young people to bring honor to the sports field and the country, he said.
