Laws Must Be For People’s Convenience Should Not Be A Burden: PM To NDA MPs

TABISH KAMAL
New Delhi, Dec 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said no innocent Indian should face harassment or inconvenience due to any law or rule, and such measures should always be for the convenience of the common people.
Addressing an NDA parliamentary party meeting here, Modi also said reforms should be brought in all aspects of society and not just in the economy.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, which was attended by all NDA MPs, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said Prime Minister Modi gave very good guidelines for the lawmakers.
The PM said no Indian should face any inconvenience as a citizen and everyone must ensure that rules and regulations are for the convenience of the common people and improve their lives, he said.
“The prime minister said laws should not be a burden for anyone but should be for people’s convenience. Rules and regulations must be for improving the system, not to harass people. There should be no law which harasses people without any reason,” Rijiju said.
He said Modi told all NDA MPs that they should work together to accelerate development works at triple the speed and connect with youths, sports and other activities.
At the outset of the meeting, Rijiju said, Modi was felicitated for the NDA’s massive victory in the recent Bihar elections.
Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and J P Nadda, who is also the BJP president, were among those present at the meeting held at the Parliament House complex here.
Modi was garlanded by JD(U) leader Sanjay Jha and Rashtriya Lok Morcha chief Upendra Kushwaha — both Rajya Sabha members.
In the 243-member Bihar Assembly, which went to polls last month, the NDA secured 202 seats, paving the way for JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar to return as chief minister for the 10th time.
Among the alliance partners, BJP won 89 seats, JD(U) 85, LJP (Ram Vilas) 19, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) five, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha four.

Trump Signals Possible New Tariffs on Indian Rice Amid US Farmers’ Dumping Allegations

US President Donald Trump has indicated that his administration may consider imposing new tariffs on agricultural imports, including Indian rice, following strong complaints from American farmers who allege that cheap, subsidised foreign goods are damaging the US market. During a White House roundtable—where Trump unveiled a $12 billion support package for farmers—participants urged him to act against what they described as “unfair dumping” by several countries.

Farmers specifically named India, Thailand, and China as major contributors to falling domestic rice prices, claiming that subsidies abroad allow foreign producers to sell at artificially low rates. Trump responded firmly, saying such practices constitute “cheating,” and directed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to prepare a list of countries accused of undercutting US markets. He also hinted that Canadian fertiliser imports could face steep duties next.

Trump assured farmers that he would “take care” of the matter swiftly, signalling a tougher trade stance ahead. The development comes at a time when both India and Canada are seeking to stabilise relations with the US through new trade agreements, though progress remains slow. Meanwhile, a senior delegation from the US Trade Representative’s office is set to visit New Delhi on December 10–11 to continue negotiations on the Bilateral Trade Agreement, which India hopes to conclude before year-end.

Kuwait has revoked the citizenship of 24 individuals, including the prominent Islamic preacher Tariq al-Suwaidan, according to a decree published in the Kuwait Today official gazette.

Kuwait Dec 9 : Decree No. 227 of 2025 states that citizenship has been withdrawn from “Tariq Muhammad Saleh al-Suwaidan, and those who acquired it through him by dependency.” The order was signed by Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, following a recommendation from the Minister of Interior and the approval of the Council of Ministers.

The decree did not specify the legal grounds for revoking al-Suwaidan’s citizenship. Kuwait typically withdraws nationality in cases involving dual citizenship, fraud, forgery, acquisition through “distinguished service,” or matters linked to national security or the “supreme interests of the state.”

Since the establishment of the Higher Committee for Kuwaiti Citizenship Investigations, more than 60,000 individuals have had their citizenship revoked for a range of reasons.

Al-Suwaidan, born in 1953, is widely regarded as a media figure associated with the Muslim Brotherhood rather than a traditional religious scholar. Trained in petroleum engineering, he holds a doctorate from the United States. He has faced repeated accusations of criticising neighbouring Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Last year, Kuwait’s Public Prosecution charged him with insulting a Gulf country and another Arab state on social media. He was released on bail and later acquitted by the Criminal Court on 30 July 2024, though prosecutors

EOW (Crime Branch Kashmir) Exposes Rice Diversion Scam; Charge-Sheet Filed Against Senior FCS&CA Officials

Kashmir Dec 9 : The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch J&K has filed a charge-sheet in case FIR No. 07/2020 under Sections 409, 420, 120-B RPC before the Hon’ble Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sopore, against three officers of the Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) Department. The accused include Siraj-ud-Din Bhat (then TSO PEG Baramulla) S/o Mohd Sideeq Bhat R/o Waripora, Safapora Ganderbal; Mohd Hussain Bhat (then TSO/ Storekeeper Hygam Granary) S/o Abdul Rahim BhatR/o Kichloo, Qazipora Handwara; and Mohammad Shafi Rather @ Shafi Kanda (then TSO HygamGranary) S/o Mohd Sultan Rather R/o WanigamPattan.
The case originated from a communication received from the Directorate of FCS&CA, indicating suspected misappropriation of rice from the Hygam and Baramulla (Centre D) granaries. Acting upon these inputs, a probe was initiated, and the SSP Crime Branch Kashmir ordered a Joint Surprise Check (JSC) to verify the authenticity of dispatches and receipts of food grain consignments.

The JSC uncovered glaring discrepancies. Seven truckloads of rice were shown as dispatched from PEG (Private Entrepreneurs Guarantee Scheme) Baramulla under the supervision of FCI officials and the TSO PEG Baramulla. The challans falsely recorded these consignments as received at Hygam Granary and subsequently distributed to sale centres at Wagoora, Nowpora, Kathigan Jathiar, Kalantra, and Dandmoh. However, all these sale centres categorically denied receiving any such stocks, and their official records corroborated this denial.

Further investigation revealed that the challans had been fraudulently procured by Assistant Storekeeper Palhallan Pattan, Mohammad Shafi Rather, from Siraj-ud-Din Bhat, and subsequently managed through TSO Hygam, Mohd Hussain Bhat.
The investigation established that the accused officers, in criminal conspiracy with each other and with certain officials of FCI Baramulla, misappropriated a large quantity of rice, causing a substantial pecuniary loss to the state exchequer.

Based on extensive oral and documentary evidence, the offences against the accused stand substantiated. Consequently, the charge-sheet under Section 173 Cr.PC has been submitted before the competent court for judicial determination.
