Delhi , Dec 11 : Delhi Police have recovered demonetised ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes worth more than ₹3.5 crore and arrested four men accused of running an illegal currency exchange racket. The raid was conducted near Shalimar Bagh Metro Station Gate No. 4 after police received a tip-off.

The accused have been identified as Harsh (22), Tek Chand Thakur (39), Lakshya (28) and Vipin Kumar (38). Police also seized two vehicles used by the group. During questioning, the men admitted they were exchanging the banned notes at a fraction of their value by falsely claiming they could get them replaced at the RBI.

Officials said the four had no valid documents to justify possession of the scrapped notes, making it a clear case of cheating, conspiracy and violation of the Specified Bank Notes Act. A case has been registered and the investigation is in progress.

In a separate action, the Delhi Police DIU raided an illegal factory in Alipur that was allegedly producing fake Castrol engine oil. The team, assisted by Castrol India officials, seized 239 litres of ready-to-supply infringing oil, 304 empty bottles, 3,000 barcode stickers, 706 bottle caps, over 11,000 MRP stickers and machinery used in the manufacturing process.

Retired Judges Condemn Attempts to Malign Supreme Court, Reaffirm Support for CJI

New Delhi/Srinagar, Dec 9:
A group of retired judges has issued a strong public statement denouncing what they describe as growing attempts to undermine the credibility of the Supreme Court and target the Chief Justice of India over recent judicial proceedings connected to Rohingya migrants.

The former judges expressed serious concern over what they termed “unwarranted criticism” directed at the Chief Justice following the Court’s order on December 6. They said that while judicial decisions may be debated, any effort to question the personal integrity or fairness of judges crosses a dangerous line and threatens the independence of the judiciary.

The signatories emphasized that India, though historically compassionate toward displaced communities, is not legally bound under any international treaty to accept illegal entry across its borders. They also highlighted that India is not a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, reinforcing that national authorities have the right to regulate the entry and stay of foreign nationals.

A major concern raised in the statement relates to reports of illegal Aadhaar enrolment among foreign migrants. The judges stressed that unauthorized access to Aadhaar and other identity documents poses a direct national security risk and must be thoroughly investigated. They supported the demand for a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) to identify those involved in issuing such documents and to expose any trafficking networks operating behind the scenes.

The retired judges also noted that while the humanitarian situation of Rohingya in Myanmar is distressing, the issue cannot be viewed in isolation from India’s security and legal framework. They said the Supreme Court’s directions were balanced, rooted in constitutional limits, and guided by a commitment to protect both national interest and human dignity.

Rejecting allegations of bias, the statement praises the judiciary for acting responsibly and upholding the rule of law. Any attempt to cast aspersions on the Supreme Court, they warned, weakens public trust and undermines judicial independence.

The statement concludes with a reaffirmation of “full confidence” in the Supreme Court of India and the Chief Justice, calling for restraint and responsible public discourse on such sensitive matters.

J&K Receives ₹1,068 Crore Under MGNREGS in 2025–26; Over 242 Lakh Person-Days Generated So Far

New Delhi 10/12/2025 Agencies
Jammu and Kashmir has received a major financial boost under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) for the financial year 2025–26, with the Union Government releasing ₹1,068 crore to support rural employment and ongoing developmental works across the Union Territory. The details were shared by the Ministry of Rural Development during a session of the Lok Sabha, shedding light on both the progress achieved and the challenges that remain.
According to official data, J&K has already generated 242 lakh person-days under the scheme this year, reflecting strong participation from rural households and effective utilisation of funds at the grassroots level. The scheme continues to serve as a lifeline for thousands of families in remote districts, ensuring livelihood security through guaranteed wage employment.
The Centre informed Parliament that Jammu and Kashmir currently has over 10 lakh active job cards, highlighting the scale at which MGNREGS operates across the UT. These job cards represent individuals and families who rely on the scheme for sustained income opportunities, particularly during agricultural off-seasons or in regions affected by limited private employment avenues.
However, the figures also reveal pending liabilities under the scheme. As of now, wage payments worth ₹6.10 crore remain unpaid, posing challenges for timely disbursement to workers. In addition, there are material liabilities of ₹192 crore, which include payments owed for construction materials, procurement, and other project-related expenses. Such delays often affect the pace of local development works, ranging from road construction and water conservation to rural infrastructure projects.
Officials say the UT administration is coordinating with the Centre to ensure smoother fund flow and clearance of dues. With rural employment demand expected to remain high, timely fund release will be crucial for maintaining work continuity.
MGNREGS is one of India’s largest social welfare programmes, aimed at enhancing livelihood security by guaranteeing 100 days of wage employment to rural households. In Jammu and Kashmir, the scheme has played an important role in improving rural infrastructure, empowering local communities, and supporting families in economically vulnerable areas.
With the release of fresh funds and ongoing demand for work, the coming months will be critical in determining how efficiently J&K manages wage payments, accelerates project completion, and strengthens rural employment under the scheme.

J&K High Court Bar Association Extends Full Support to Transporters’ Demands

Jammu, Dec 10:
The J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu, has formally expressed strong support for the concerns and demands raised by the transporters of Jammu and Kashmir, urging the administration to address the issues on priority. The development comes after transporter bodies submitted a detailed representation to the Transport Commissioner, highlighting the growing challenges faced by the transport sector across the Union Territory.

In an official communication issued by the Bar Association, Senior Advocate and President K. Nirmal Kishore Kotwal stated that the Association has “carefully reviewed” the representation submitted by the transporters and found their demands “genuine and valid.” The Bar Association acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and emphasised that the transport sector forms a vital backbone for economic activity, mobility, and livelihood in the region.

The Association noted that the transporters are facing a series of pressing issues that require immediate government attention. While the letter does not list each demand in detail, it highlights that the problems raised by the transporter community are critical and affect not only their operations but also the broader public that relies on uninterrupted transport services.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Bar Association stated it stands “in full support of the Transport Association” and will continue to extend its unwavering backing should the situation escalate in the future. The leadership also assured that the Bar Association is prepared to assist the Transport Association in tackling any legal or administrative challenges that may arise.

Significantly, the Bar Association appealed to the relevant authorities to treat the matter with urgency. The communication stresses the need for “prompt action” to resolve the issues at the earliest possible opportunity, highlighting that delays could further complicate an already strained sector.

The letter was signed by Senior Advocate K. Nirmal Kishore Kotwal, representing the J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu. The statement underscores the organisation’s role as a prominent legal body advocating for fairness, transparency, and timely intervention wherever public-interest issues arise.

The support from the Bar Association is likely to strengthen the ongoing negotiations between the transporters and the Transport Department, as transport bodies have been voicing concerns over long-pending issues for several months.

Further developments are expected as the matter progresses.

NMC Raises Red Alert J&K Medical Colleges Failing Minimum Faculty Requirements

NMC Raises Red Alert J&K Medical Colleges Failing Minimum Faculty Requirements

Srinagar 10 Dec 2025 / Ishfaq Gowher
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a stark and urgent warning to medical colleges across India, and the situation in Jammu & Kashmir is among the most alarming. The Commission’s latest department-wise assessment under the Minimum Standard Requirements (MSR 2023) has revealed major gaps in faculty strength, raising serious concerns about academic standards and the future of MBBS seats in the Union Territory.
As per NMC norms, a 150-seat MBBS college must maintain 226 full-time teaching personnel—including professors, associate professors, assistant professors, senior residents, and tutors. J&K currently has six colleges functioning under this category, including GMC Srinagar, GMC Jammu, GMC Baramulla, GMC Kathua, GMC Doda, and ASCOMS Jammu.
For institutions upgraded to 200 MBBS seats—notably GMC Srinagar and GMC Jammu—the bar is even higher. The NMC mandates 20 professors, 51 associate professors, 70 assistant professors, and 73 senior residents across 23 departments. General Medicine alone requires a full complement of senior faculty.
Despite this, the ground reality remains dismal. GMC Srinagar faces 175 faculty vacancies, severely impacting both teaching and patient care. SKIMS Medical College reports a 60% shortfall, while newly established colleges such as GMC Handwara, GMC Doda, and GMC Rajouri are grappling with over 100 vacant positions each. Many of these institutions are forced to rely on contractual hires or internal adjustments merely to keep departments functional.
Recruitment processes remain slow and inconsistent. Several crucial posts have not been referred to recruiting bodies, and many advertisements are still pending finalisation. Recent NMC inspections have flagged multiple colleges in J&K for having less than half of the required professor-level faculty in critical departments — a violation that could jeopardize annual renewals and jeopardize MBBS seat permissions.
In Parliament, Union Health Minister JP Nadda said that the NMC has strengthened its regulatory framework through MSR 2023 and the Medical Institutions (Qualification of Faculty) Regulations 2025. These rules mandate that all faculty must be full-time, prohibit private practice during duty hours, and allow visiting faculty only for supplementary undergraduate teaching.
With J&K’s medical colleges racing against time to fill vacant positions, the NMC’s findings underscore a pressing reality: without immediate reforms and targeted recruitment, the region’s expanding medical education network risks serious disruption, impacting thousands of students and critical public health services.

Australia Enforces Social Media Ban for Under-16s, PM Albanese Says Move Will Restore Childhood

Australia  Dec 10 : Australia has become the first country to enforce a nationwide ban on social media accounts for children under 16, a move Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says is aimed at giving children “a childhood” and offering parents greater peace of mind.

Albanese announced that the new rule took effect on Wednesday. He said the decision responds to the pressures young people face from algorithms, endless scrolling, and harmful online content.

“Across Australia, those under 16 are starting their day a little differently — without social media. It’s a big change, but it really matters,” he said. “By banning social media for those under 16, we’re giving children a childhood and parents more peace of mind.”

He added that the shift “takes power back from big tech companies” and places responsibility on them to keep minors off their platforms.

Under the new law, social media companies must prevent anyone under 16 from creating or keeping accounts, or face heavy penalties of up to about 50 million dollars. Children and parents will not face any punishment.

The restriction follows the passage of the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024 on November 28. Parents cannot override the rule with consent.

UNICEF Australia said the ban aims to protect the mental health and safety of children, citing risks such as cyberbullying, harmful content and online predators. Apps designed for younger users — including Messenger Kids, WhatsApp, Google Classroom, Kids Helpline and YouTube Kids — are not expected to be affected.
