Asserting that the security agencies are functioning with great synergy in dealing with terrorism and law and order problem in the Kashmir valley, Director General CRPF RR Bhatnagar on Friday said this year so far more than 140 terrorists have been neutralised in Jammu and Kashmir.
“CRPF and other sister concern agencies are dealing with many challenges in the Kashmir valley, including terrorism, law and order problem, stone pelting, strikes, which are among major tasks,” Mr Bhatnagar here told reporters during a press conference after inaugurating family quarters on city outskirts.
The DG said, “the security forces have good coordination in dealing with the situation and so far this year, 142 terrorists have been neutralised by the security agencies in the state.”
Mr Bhatnagar said, ”the CRPF is using non-lethal weapons to tackle with law and order problem”, adding, “terrorists are trying to infiltrate from border and some are operational within the hinterland but security forces have upper hand and they are successfully conducting anti-terrorism operations.”
On attacks on police personnel, he said, “Out of frustration, they (terrorists) are attacking policemen and other security personnel. It is a coward act on their part to create terror among people but our forces are doing a commendable job.”
The CRPF chief also said approximately 200 to 250 terrorists are active in the Kashmir valley, including foreign mercenaries and their number keep shifting, adding, “from 2016 to 2018 so far, our jawans have less injuries and casualties. We are also assisting J&K Police, Army, para-military forces in all type of operations.”
The DG said non-lethal weapons like smoke shells, plastic bullets, plastic sticks are being used to tackle trouble shooters and added, “CRPF is also through its programme ‘madadgar’ motivating misled youth to join mainstream and many programmes have also been launched in this context.”
Mr Bhatnagar on camps located in populated areas said, “many times fidayeen attacks happened in the recent past and they have been successfully countered by the security forces while steps have been taken to enhance security grid of the camps especially those located close to residential areas.”
He also said, ”CRPF is also geared up for proposed Panchayat Polls to be held in Jammu and Kashmir.
The DG however, also lauded the role of CRPF for its functioning in Jammu and Kashmir, naxal hit areas, North East and courageously countering terrorist related acts.”
”CRPF effectively deals with law and order problem in various parts besides standing by victims during natural calamities and flood hit areas,” he said, adding that this year on August 15, CRPF was rewarded 96 gallantry awards, including five ‘shauryachakras’.
He said time to time, CRPF is being equipped with latest technology and they are also being upgraded with hi-tech gadgets to counter trouble situations.
