Srinagar: Following Congress’s decision to leave the Nagrota Assembly seat to its ally, the National Conference on Monday announced DDC member Shamim Begum as its candidate. NC’s Jammu Provincial President Rattan Lal Gupta confirmed that the party high command approved her nomination.
Shamim Begum, a Muslim Gujjar woman, had won the 2020 District Development Council elections from Nagrota. Congress opted out “in the interest of defeating BJP,” citing friendly past collaboration with NC. The move comes amid growing friction between NC and Congress over seat-sharing in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, which has strained alliance ties.
