Srinagar, August 1: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan who went missing from his battalion headquarters in Srinagar has been located in New Delhi, officials confirmed on Thursday.
Constable (General Duty) Sugam Choudhary, a resident of Uttar Pradesh and posted with ‘C’ Company of 60 Battalion BSF at Panthachowk on the outskirts of Srinagar, had reportedly gone missing on Wednesday evening. His sudden disappearance had triggered an alert within security ranks.
According to officials, extensive search operations were launched across Srinagar, including bus terminals, taxi stands, and the Nowgam Railway Station. However, the constable could not be traced initially. Consequently, a formal missing report was filed at Police Station Panthachowk.
Confirming the development, a senior BSF officer stated that Choudhary was eventually traced in Delhi. “He was found to be travelling towards his native place without obtaining proper leave or movement permission,” the officer said. “A departmental inquiry has been initiated to probe the unauthorized movement.”
The officer also clarified that there was no indication of any subversive angle in the matter. The constable’s act is currently being viewed as a breach of protocol, and further disciplinary action is likely to follow.
The incident has raised questions over internal troop discipline and procedural adherence, especially in sensitive deployment zones like Srinagar. Security agencies are maintaining heightened alert in view of the ongoing Amarnath Yatra and general regional sensitivities.
More details are awaited pending the outcome of the internal investigation.
