Srinagar, Jan 20: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday inaugurated the redeveloped Amira Kadal bridge in Srinagar, marking another significant milestone under the Srinagar Smart City project, officials said.

The historic bridge, situated over the Jhelum River, has been redesigned exclusively for pedestrian use, with the objective of improving public mobility, enhancing urban aesthetics, and strengthening connectivity between Lal Chowk and adjoining commercial hubs in the heart of the city.

Officials said the redevelopment of Amira Kadal focuses on creating a safe, accessible, and citizen-friendly public space, while also integrating heritage-sensitive elements into Srinagar’s evolving riverfront development plan. The project aims to balance modern urban infrastructure with the city’s rich historical and cultural identity.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Lieutenant Governor was accompanied by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg, senior officials from the civil and police administration, and the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Lal Chowk. The presence of senior officials highlighted the administration’s emphasis on urban renewal and public infrastructure development.

According to officials, the revamped bridge features wider walkways, improved seating facilities, and modern lighting arrangements to ensure enhanced safety and comfort for pedestrians. Special attention has been given to design elements that encourage public use, leisure walking, and social interaction, making the bridge not just a transit point but a public gathering space.

Authorities said the pedestrian-only design is expected to ease congestion and streamline foot traffic in one of Srinagar’s busiest commercial zones. The bridge is also anticipated to benefit local traders and businesses by facilitating smoother pedestrian movement between key marketplaces around Lal Chowk.

Amira Kadal, one of Srinagar’s oldest and most iconic bridges, holds significant historical importance in the city’s urban landscape. Officials noted that its redevelopment reflects a broader vision to modernize public infrastructure without compromising heritage value.

The project is part of a wider initiative under the Srinagar Smart City mission aimed at upgrading public spaces, improving mobility, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

Officials said similar projects are underway across the city to transform Srinagar into a more inclusive, sustainable, and pedestrian-friendly urban centre, while preserving its unique cultural character.
