Kishtwar, Jan 20: The encounter in Sonar forest, Chatroo, entered its third consecutive day on Tuesday, with joint security forces conducting a large-scale search operation across the dense forest despite no fresh contact being reported.
Officials said surveillance remains active, with drones and helicopters monitoring suspected hideouts. Hundreds of soldiers are combing the forest on foot, supported by sniffer dogs, while a tight security cordon restricts movement in and around the area. Roadside checks and frisking continue in Chatroo and adjoining routes to prevent any escape. Village Defence Guards have been deployed to patrol vulnerable hamlets and forest fringes.
Eight security personnel were injured during the initial gunfight, including para trooper Havildar Gajendra Singh, who later succumbed to his injuries. Senior officers paid tribute to his sacrifice, calling it a reflection of courage and duty.
Authorities emphasized that the operation will continue until the area is fully cleared and urged locals to remain indoors and cooperate with security forces.
