Kathua, Feb 15: The Kathua district administration has imposed restrictions on movement in a five-kilometre belt along the International Border and banned the movement of heavy vehicles on the old Samba–Kathua road at night for 60 days, citing heightened security concerns and the possibility of cross-border firing.
According to an order issued by District Magistrate Kathua, Rajesh Sharma, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, unnecessary movement has been restricted in the border area falling under the jurisdiction of the local unit, from Border Outpost (BOP) Phararpur Forward to BOP Karol Krishan. The order came into effect from Feb 14, 2026, and will remain in force for 60 days unless withdrawn earlier.
The order also prohibits the movement of heavy vehicles, including trucks, tippers and multi-axle vehicles, on the old Samba–Kathua road between 9 pm and 6 am during the enforcement period. The District Magistrate stated that the security situation in the border areas had become sensitive and that there was a possibility of cross-border firing at any time. The restrictions were imposed to ensure the safety of residents, prevent threats to human life, and maintain public order.
The administration said the measures were necessary to prevent anti-national activities and minimise risks arising from the prevailing security environment. The order noted that restrictions were imposed after assessing sufficient grounds for immediate preventive action to protect human life and maintain public tranquillity.
