Srinagar , Jan 12 : A recent study by the University of Kashmir has raised alarms over the growing threat posed by glacial lakes in the region. Five lakes—Bramsar, Chirsar, Nundkol, Gangabal, and Bhagsar—have been identified as highly vulnerable to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), which could trigger devastating floods downstream.
Researchers, using satellite imagery and field surveys, warned that a single breach could endanger more than 3,000 buildings, several bridges, and hydropower infrastructure across the valley. The study highlights how retreating glaciers, rising temperatures, and climate change are accelerating the formation of these high-risk lakes.
Authorities have been urged to implement early warning systems, continuous monitoring, and engineering safeguards to minimize potential loss of life and property. The Jammu and Kashmir government has already initiated measures, including the formation of a Focused GLOF Monitoring Committee and targeted expeditions to the most vulnerable lakes.
Experts stress that with the pace of glacial melt increasing due to climate change, immediate action is critical to protect communities and infrastructure downstream from these hidden threats.
