Srinagar Nov 16 : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday praised the Jammu and Kashmir Police for dismantling a major pan-India terror module, stating that timely intelligence and coordinated operations prevented a series of planned attacks across the country.
Speaking at an event in Jammu, the LG said the module—linked to the recent blast near the Red Fort in Delhi—was uncovered due to the “swift and professional efforts” of J&K Police.
LG Sinha also expressed deep sorrow over the accidental explosion at Nowgam Police Station, which claimed nine lives during the forensic handling of explosive material recovered from the arrested terrorists.
“A specialised team was examining the seized explosives when the tragic accident occurred. We lost brave police personnel and officials who were performing their duty with dedication. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families,” he said.
Clarifying the nature of the incident, the LG reiterated that the blast had no terror angle and involved no outside interference, emphasising that it was an accidental explosion during a technical procedure.
He commended the commitment of the J&K Police, stating that their efforts had “saved countless lives” by averting major terror attacks across multiple states.
Officials have launched a detailed inquiry into the Nowgam incident, and support measures have been initiated for the injured and the families of those who lost their lives.
The explosion occurred late Friday night while a team was extracting samples from a large and unstable cache of explosives seized during the probe into a ‘white-collar’ terror network. Among the nine deceased were six police personnel—SIA Inspector Israr Ahmad Shah; SG constables Javaid Mansoor Rather and Arshid Ahmad Shah; SG constable Aijaz Afzal Mir; and constables Mohammad Amin Mir and Showkat Ahmad Bhat from the Forensic Science Laboratory.
Civilian casualties included Naib Tehsildar Muzaffar Ahmed Khan, local chowkidar Suhail Ahmad Rather, and Mohammad Shafi Parray, a tailor.
