The Jammu and Kashmir government Tuesday constituted an eight-member Special Task Force headed by Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta for “elimination of Single Use Plastic and addressing the issue of plastic pollution” in the Union territory.
As per an order issued to this effect by the General Administration Department, the other seven members of the task force are Chairman J&K Pollution Control Committee and Administrative Secretaries of departments of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Industries and Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, School Education, Higher Education and Forest, Ecology and Environment.
The terms of reference of the task force will be:, to prepare a comprehensive Action Plan for implementation of provisions of Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016, and
enforcement of the ban on single use plastic items, organize regular meetings of State Level Monitoring Committee for purpose of monitoring of implementation of
the PWM Rules, 2016, further strengthen Urban Local Bodies and Gram Panchayats for fulfilling responsibilities cost under PWM
Rules, 2016, leverage funds available under Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 for development of waste management infrastructure to mitigate plastic pollution in J&K, effectively strategize the implementation of SRO 231
dated 26-03-2019, for banning Single Use Plastic (SUP) in J &K, mobilize and build a strong public movement for elimination of SUP with wider public participation including educational institutions (Schools, Colleges, Universities etc.) NCC, NSS, Scouts, Youth Clubs, Eco clubs, opinion makers and Voluntary Organizations through Urban Local Bodies and encourage and incentivize the industry involved in the manufacture of eco-friendly biodegradable substitutes for SUP.
63 new COVID-19 cases in J&K, one death in Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir Friday reported 63 new COVID-19 cases while one death was also reported in Kashmir division in the last 24 hours.
Of the fresh cases, 30 were reported in Kashmir and 33 in Jammu as per data thus taking the overall infection tally to 3,20,403 while the death toll has reached 4,374.
A total of 3,14, 620 have already recovered from the disease including the 166 recoveries in the last 24 hours alone.
Presently, there are a total of 1,409 active virus cases in J&K- 845 in Kashmir and 564 in Jammu.
Three dead in scooty-car collision
Three persons were killed on Friday after the two—wheeler they were riding was hit by a car at Panzinara area on Srinagar outskirts.
Report said that the trio travelling on a scooty was hit by the car bearing registration number JK05E—1226, resulting into their on spot death.
The deceased were identified as Sameer Ahmad Dar, son of Sonaullah Dar, Mushtaq Ahmad Malik, son of Ghulam Muhammad Malik and Shahid Fayaz, son of Fayaz Ahmad Dar—all residents of Panzinara.
An official said a police team from Parimpora Police Station has rushed to the spot.
Two LeT terrorists killed in Sopore encounter
Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists were eliminated in an encounter at Warpora village in Sopore, Baramulla on Friday.
Two terrorists have been killed in the encounter so far. Police have seized incriminating materials including arms and ammunition, the Kashmir Zone Police said.
“Both the terrorists who were killed in the encounter belonged to the Lashkar-e-Taiba outfit,” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar told ANI.
He said that one of them identified as Fayaz War was involved in several attacks and killings of civilians and security personnel.
He was the last perpetrator of violence in north Kashmir, added IGP Kashmir.
According to police, a top terrorist commander along with an associate was trapped in a house in Warpora village where the police and security forces were engaged in the encounter.
The operation was launched on Thursday evening on specific police input at Warpora in Sopore.
The search operation is underway, police said.
