Srinagar, Dec 18: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has granted executive magistrate powers to all Regional Transport Officers and Assistant Regional Transport Officers within their respective jurisdictions.
According to a notification issued by the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the decision has been taken under Section 14(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The order authorises RTOs and ARTOs to exercise the powers of Executive Magistrates as provided under the BNSS, until further orders.
Officials said the move is aimed at strengthening the enforcement of transport and road safety laws across Jammu and Kashmir. By conferring magisterial powers, transport officers will be able to take prompt legal action against violations, improving compliance and on-ground regulation within their areas of responsibility.
