Jammu – A 10-member delegation of the Jammu and Kashmir Congress today met Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and submitted a memorandum demanding the announcement of a ₹1 lakh crore relief package for flood-affected areas of the Union Territory.

Speaking to the media, Congress chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma said that the recent floods have caused massive devastation in Jammu and Kashmir. He recalled that in 2014, the Union Government had sanctioned a special package of ₹80,000 crore for flood damages, but this year’s losses are even greater. Hence, the Congress has demanded a larger package of ₹1 lakh crore to help rehabilitate people and restore normalcy.

Sharma added that the package should also cover the reconstruction of damaged roads, government buildings, and schools. He further noted that the memorandum handed over to the LG also seeks an inquiry into the lapses that worsened the recent crisis.

On this occasion, senior Congress leader Raman Bhalla said that people who have lost their land must be provided alternative land at the earliest. He demanded the formation of a joint committee to assess damages and ensure that those whose houses were fully destroyed or rendered unlivable receive full compensation for rebuilding.
