Apart from its academics excellence, the University of Jammu is all set to become hub of sports in the days to come with the introduction of sports academies in various disciplines.
The Jammu University authorities however, have taken special initiatives in prioritizing sports activities vis-?-vis with academics for the students pursuing higher studies in the institution.
According to sources, the new Vice Chancellor of University of Jammu, Prof Manoj Dhar, have also expressed keen interest in boosting sports in the campus while the Jammu and Kashmir Governor, N N Vohra, who is also the Chancellor of the Jammu University, has also on many occasions advocated for giving push to sports activities to groom the personality and mind of the youth.
“We are coming up with major initiatives to promote sports in the campus in coming days and plans are already in the pipeline,” Daud Iqbal Baba, Director, Department of Physical Education here told.
He said that initially, around 30 sports academies in different disciplines are being established in the University out of which, eight are in functional mode.
“We will also be following All India Universities calendar of activities issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development so that the players of Jammu University begin their routine practices in different activities for participating in upcoming competitions,” said the Director.
Mr Baba further added that sports events under ‘Khelo India’ are also scheduled for the month of January-February 2019, adding, “we will train our players under the guidance of specialized coaches and experts so that they excel in different disciplines and bring laurels to the institutions.”
The Director further said, “The sportspersons, who have sought admissions in the University on sports quota will also be made accountable with their mandatory participation in different sports events by representing University.”
“In academic audit report, the issue of non-participation of students sought seats in sports quota was also raised and in the next academic council meeting, it may be decided that such students have to participate in sports activities and they will be given assessment marks based on their participations in the competitions,” said Mr Baba.
He however, added that University of Jammu have always remained in forefront in the field of sports and with coming up of new academies, it will become hub of sports, adding, “anybody, who is found eligible as per the University norms, can join the academy.”
