The spread of bird flu in many neighboring states and the ban on poultry products in J&K, has raised confusion among people whether the J&K Administration is on alert, and is it safe to consume poultry products. So today to clear the confusion we met Dr. DS Bindra Chief Husbandry officer and Joint Director of Animal Department.
During the interview, Dr. Bindra said “we have already issued advisories and have also banned the import of poultry products into J&K”. Briefing about the flu he said ” it is a viral disease. It can also be found in humans. The virus is basically of 4 types – A-type, B-type, C-type, and D-type. The A-type is the cause of flu among birds. The virus has 2 proteins because of which different stains are formed. The reason why the flu is looked at as dangerous is that it can be found in birds as well as humans.”

Talking about the preparation by J&K Administration he said “whenever we find high mortality of migratory or poultry birds we immediately take the samples from dead birds and send them to the lab for testing. We are regularly meeting the breeders and poultry farm owners to aware them of the flu. All the poultry farms in J&K are maintaining proper hygiene in their farms. All the slaughter shops have been directed to follow the advisory issued by the government”.
Clearing the doubt to consume poultry products or not he said “all the poultry products we consume are properly cooked. And when the cooking temperature crosses 70degree Celsius the virus becomes negative or gets dead so, it is safe to consume poultry products amid bird flu”.
