Srinagar, Jan 25: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe weather alert for Jammu and Kashmir, warning of heavy snowfall, strong winds, and deteriorating conditions due to an active Western Disturbance affecting the region.
The IMD said the system is expected to impact both the Kashmir Valley and parts of Jammu, particularly higher reaches and hilly areas, causing reduced visibility, sharp temperature drops, and possible disruptions to road connectivity.
Heavy snowfall is likely across upper reaches, while lower areas may see intermittent rain and snow. The conditions could increase the risk of landslides, avalanches, and traffic disruptions on key highways and interior roads.
Authorities have been urged to stay alert and ensure readiness for weather-related emergencies, and residents have been advised to exercise caution, especially when travelling in high-altitude and vulnerable areas.
The IMD added that conditions are expected to remain unstable over the next 48 hours, with another Western Disturbance approaching from January 26, potentially bringing additional snowfall and rain across parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
People are advised to follow official updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense snowfall and strong winds.
