Qazigund, Jan 21: Kulgam Police have stepped up security along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) and across Kulgam district ahead of Republic Day to prevent any attempts to disturb public peace.

A senior police official told Kashmir News Corner that the heightened measures are being implemented under the direction of SSP Kulgam, Shri Anayat Ali Choudhary (IPS), and are personally supervised by the Additional SP NHW Qazigund, SDPO Qazigund, and DySP SOG Mirbazar.

As part of the operation, random vehicle checks and frisking are being carried out at key points along NH-44, including the Kashmir Navyug Tunnel gate, Qazigund, Mirbazar, Alstop, Khudwani Bypass, and other sensitive areas in Kulgam.

“The focus is on monitoring any suspicious movements of subversive elements ahead of the national celebrations,” the official said. Several pillion riders have been checked, and multiple two-wheelers and four-wheelers without valid documents have been seized.

Multi-tier patrolling teams are conducting thorough checks along the highway and nearby areas, aided by metal detectors, while dog squads have been deployed to strengthen surveillance.

The officer added, “We are fully prepared to handle any situation and ensure the safety of commuters and residents.”
