Gujarat ATS Foils Ricin Plot; Doctor Arrested Over Alleged Plans Targeting Markets

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has averted what officials describe as a potential chemical attack after arresting Dr. Ahmed Mohiyuddin Saiyed, an MBBS graduate, in connection with an alleged plot targeting crowded food markets in New Delhi and Ahmedabad.
Investigators say the intelligence-led operation uncovered plans to use the highly toxic substance ricin, prompting swift action by state counter-terror teams. Dr. Saiyed was detained following coordinated raids and searches that yielded electronic devices, documentary material and items authorities believe are relevant to the probe. No technical or procedural details about the toxin have been released by officials.
A senior ATS officer said the arrest came after credible leads suggested the plot was in an advanced stage. “Prompt sharing of intelligence and rapid deployment prevented a potential mass-casualty incident,” the official told reporters, adding that forensic and cyber teams are analysing seized material to map communications and possible accomplices.
The case has been handed over to central agencies for further investigation. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is expected to join the probe to examine links, if any, to wider extremist networks and to determine criminal charges under India’s anti-terror laws.
Authorities emphasised there is no immediate public health risk following the operation. Local administrations in both cities have been alerted as a precautionary measure while investigators complete laboratory testing and follow-up inquiries.
