Srinagar, Jan 19 : The body of Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, one of the victims of the 2024 Gandbal boat tragedy, was recovered from the Jhelum river on Monday, ending a long and painful search, locals said.
Residents of the area said Sheikh’s body, which had remained untraced since the incident, was spotted and retrieved from the river stretch near the accident site earlier today.
Following the tragedy, elite divers from MARCOS, along with the SDRF’s Quick Response Team, had carried out extensive underwater search operations. Despite sustained efforts, the body could not be recovered at that time.
The Gandbal boat tragedy had claimed eight lives, including children, and continues to be remembered as one of the deadliest incidents in Srinagar in recent years.
