Sports awards categories for Jammu Kashmir UT have been announced and a campaign of discrimination by senior players was held on social media. According to the senior sports players of Jammu, the awards list has names of junior players with less of number of medals and experience. They complained that the award committee has clearly encouraged discrimination.
Judo senior player, Abhishek Jamwal said “I think sports awards are only for the players with approach in J&K. The list includes selected players while the deserving ones are left out. I’m a 2 times International medalist and 13 times National medalist but after seeing the list I feel my hard work and medals mean nothing. I request LG Sir to look into the matter personally as the list is totally injustice to players who shed their sweat to earn name for their UT and the Nation. This is a wrong step if sports culture is to be promoted in J&K as it will lower down the moral of players of all categories.”
Appu Jamwal said “I’m a senior cup medalist, Federation Cup medalist, All India Inter-University medalist and have participated 5 times in Senior Nationals. If the awards were meant for junior players the notification should’ve not been sent to senior players. We’re fools to apply with our senior certificates and medals.”
Ayush, another medalist said “We’re into our respective fields since 17-18 years. We practice for hours and put in hard work for our Country but after seeing the list it feels like giving up. But, again the love for the game is above all.”
The players complained about their sports career opportunities. They talked about the stay on their jobs and lack of appreciation in sports.
“We’ve never done politics in sports. Our dedication is what brought us here. Our jobs through SRO 349 has stay on it since 7-8 years. There is lack of sports counselling, appreciation, infrastructure and facilities. We aren’t getting our deserved awards. It’s time to focus on sports and our careers too.”
