Coronavirus impacts tourism sector in Jammu

The tourism industry in newly formed Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is staring at a rough phase this year as advance bookings and queries have decreased significantly due to coronavirus scare.

Tourism operators in Jammu and Kashmir have kept fingers crossed expecting this scare to ward off in March itself so that they could expect better tourist arrivals in late summer and autumn season.

Earlier, in a statement, Chamber of Commerce and Industry told, “this is one of the worst crises ever to hit the Indian tourism industry impacting all its geographical segments – inbound, outbound and domestic, almost all tourism verticals – leisure, adventure, heritage, MICE, cruise, corporate and niche segments. The whole tourism value chain across hotels, travel agents, tour operations, destinations, restaurants, family entertainment venues and air, land and sea transportation has been hit.

In Jammu region, the Tourism sector was also affected badly due to Covid-19 pandemic. The newly inaugurated tourism projects are looking for visitors. Same circumstances were seen in newly established Gandola project which was inaugurated by Former Lieutenant General Girish Chandra Murmu on July 27 in Jammu and due to new guidelines issued by the government of Jammu and Kashmir, the people of Jammu and Kashmir are still waiting for enjoying the ride.

While talking to JK Newspoint, a local told, “from last many years after the announcement of this project we are aggrievedly waiting for this project to complete but due to world-wide Covid-19 pandemic, we are still waiting for it despite its inauguration.”

The member of Tourism industry told, “We hope there is some clarity about this virus scares by end of this month, otherwise, it is a bad signal for us, as it will ruin the tourism season for the whole year. We already have a very limited period of tourism activity here.”
