Srinagar, Dec 27: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday held a peaceful programme at Sher-i-Kashmir Park here to protest against the newly formed four labour codes and to press for long-pending demands of workers.
The programme, which began around 11 a.m., was addressed by senior CITU leaders including Abdul Rashid Pandit, Abdul Rashid Najjar, Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, Aashiq Hussain, Haneefa Mir, Dilshada Banoo, Mohd Afzal Parrey and Mohd Yaqub Ganaie. The speakers strongly criticised the four labour codes, terming them anti-worker and detrimental to labour rights and job security.
Leaders demanded the immediate rollback of the labour codes and called for the implementation of minimum wages for all categories of workers. They also highlighted the issues faced by ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers and other scheme-based employees, demanding regularisation, social security and fair remuneration.
The protest witnessed participation from various trade unions and workers’ organisations from across the Valley. Representatives of different unions raised slogans and reiterated their resolve to intensify the struggle if the demands were not addressed.
The organisers maintained that the programme remained peaceful throughout and urged the government to engage in dialogue with trade unions to resolve the grievances of workers.
