Srinagar : National Conference spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar has expressed strong regret over the controversy surrounding MBBS admissions at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Education (SMVDIME). He described it as unfortunate that the Lieutenant Governor has reportedly accepted what he termed a “divisive and communal” memorandum regarding the admissions. Dar emphasized that minority institutions across India accommodate students from all religions, highlighting that such diversity is standard practice in higher education. He noted, “A large number of Hindu students study at Aligarh Muslim University, and the same is true for Jamia Millia Islamia. Has anyone ever raised a question about that?” He further stated that the SMVDIME controversy risks creating unnecessary divisions and that such debates should not target institutions based on the religion of their managing bodies. Observers note that the remarks underline ongoing sensitivities around minority institutions in Jammu and Kashmir and across India, particularly in professional courses like medicine. Dar’s comments reflect the position of the National Conference advocating for inclusive education and fair treatment for all students regardless of religious affiliation. The issue continues to draw attention from educational authorities, political leaders, and civil society groups, with calls for transparent and non-discriminatory admission processes.
