Leh, Ladakh, Sept 24: A massive protest in Leh demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule turned violent on Tuesday, resulting in clashes between demonstrators and police.

Amid the escalating unrest, protesters reportedly set the BJP office in Leh on fire, triggering panic in the area. Several vehicles were also damaged as the situation spiraled out of control.

Police resorted to lathicharge and other measures to disperse the crowds, leading to injuries on both sides. Authorities described the situation as “highly volatile” and said additional security forces have been deployed to restore order.

The protesters, led by local groups and activists, reiterated that Ladakh’s constitutional and developmental aspirations cannot be ignored any longer. They warned that the agitation will intensify if their demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule status are not addressed at the earliest.
