The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will boycott municipal and panchayat elections in October, said party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Monday.
“It was felt that any attempt to impose any electoral exercise in the current atmosphere of fear and apprehension would seriously erode the credibility of the process and intuitions. It would defeat the very purpose of it,” said Mufti, a former chief minister, in Srinagar.
The PDP’s decision follows rival National Conference’s announcement to boycott the elections to protest what it says attempts to dilute a constitutional law that give special rights to Jammu and Kashmir.
The Supreme Court last month adjourned hearing to January 2019 on a bunch of petitions against the Article 35A of the Constitution, which empowers the Jammu and Kashmir’s legislature to define “permanent residents” of the state. In the court, the state had pleaded for deferment of hearing till the panchayat elections were conducted.
