Jammu, Feb 5: Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Jammu late Thursday night on a two-day visit to review the security situation along the borders, assess development initiatives, and engage with families of security personnel who have laid down their lives in the line of duty.
The Home Minister landed at Jammu Technical Airport around 10:45 pm and proceeded directly to Lok Bhavan, where key official engagements are scheduled during his stay.
According to official sources, Shah’s visit will include inspections of forward border areas, high-level security review meetings, and discussions on development priorities in the Union Territory. On Friday, he is scheduled to visit Border Outpost (BOP) Gurnam, followed by BOP Bobiya, where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of multiple welfare projects for border guarding forces through virtual mode. These initiatives are aimed at strengthening infrastructure and improving facilities for personnel deployed in sensitive border zones.
Later in the day, the Home Minister will chair a comprehensive security review meeting in Jammu to evaluate the prevailing law and order situation and ongoing counter-terrorism measures. He will also interact with families of martyrs and take part in a compassionate appointment programme, underlining the government’s commitment to the welfare of bereaved families.
On Saturday, Shah will preside over a meeting focused on development and governance in Jammu and Kashmir, reviewing the progress of major projects and future plans for the Union Territory before returning to New Delhi.
Political reactions to the visit have been mixed. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he would raise issues related to the reopening of tourist destinations closed after recent security incidents. Opposition leaders welcomed the visit, expressing hope that it would accelerate development and address concerns related to youth, employment, and restoration of confidence in the region.
The visit is being seen as a continuation of the Centre’s approach of combining security assessments with administrative and developmental reviews in Jammu and Kashmir.
