Encouraged after administration allowed former chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah to met senior party leaders, the National Conference has finally started political activities in the Kashmir valley after remaining silent since August 5, 2019.
A meeting of district Srinagar party functionaries was held at party headquarter Nawai-e-Subah on Saturday where senior party leaders, including General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar and additional General secretary Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal addressed them, including women.
Today’s meeting was first after NC president and former chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah was allowed to meet senior party leaders for the past three days. Dr Abdullah called these meeting after UT administration informed the court that no NC leader has been put under house arrest after their release from detention. The meetings have been called to see if the government will allow these leaders to attend.
Dr Abdullah and his son, vice-president of NC, Omar Abdullah had filed a number of petitions alleging that despite release from detention , about 16 senior NC leaders have been put under house arrest.
A NC spokesman said this evening that for the first time after over a year, a meeting of Srinagar district party functionaries was held at Nawa-e-Subah.
He said party General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar addressed functionaries while Dr Kamal, Provincial president Nasir Aslam Wani, Shammi Oberoi, Syed Akhoon, Showkat Mir, Peer Afaq, Salman Ali Sagar, Sabiya Qadri were also present.
He said eight party leaders including Dr Bashir Veeri, Irfan Shah, Aga Mehmood, Mohammad Khalil Bandh, Saifudin Bhat, Abdul Majid Larmi, G N Adgami, Hilal Lone met Dr Abdullah at his residence.
Dr Abdullah has decided to call meetings of party leaders after UT administration informed the court that no NC leader has been put under house arrest after their release from detention. The meetings have been called to see if the government will allow these leaders to attend, a NC spokesman said.
He said the political situation in all the three region—Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh—was discussed during the meeting. Besides problems being faced by the people, party programme and future challenges and strategy were also discussed.
